The Head/Cab option also allows for a very wide variety of cab/speaker combinations which are not the case with the combo. The MkV combo comes stock with a C90 speaker and is a 3/4 back cab. Alternately, the MkV 112 combo can be purchased with a V30 speaker, but it is still a 3/4 back cab design.

Again, this is a bogus argument. I can (and regularly do) disconnect the internal speaker and add an external cab instead. The combo offers all the flexibility the head does, and even more (because of the option of using the internal speaker instead of/in addition to the external cab).

If, on the other hand, you mean that with a combo, that means lugging around a heavy cab and a heavy combo (instead of a slimmer head), it's no longer a flexibility issue. It's a roadability issue, as I said earlier.

LesPaul70,

Your points are well taken, and I agree the combo can be connected to any/all external cabs as one may desire. In that respect, yes, the combo is more versatile because you have the option of connecting it to external cabs, but can also use it as a stand alone grab and go amp "which is what I do" with very satifying results for my needs.

One other comment.....the easily removable caster design offered by MB is excellent!! I find it very useful to transfer my MkV combo into position on stage, remove the casters in 1 minute, and play! I do prefer the sound of my combo setting firmly on the ground (with casters removed) FWIW.

Thanks for all the responses guys that helps a lot. I'm going to try both out next week so hopefully I can come to some sort of a compromise. Also the guitar store I'm heading to has both the combo and head in stock so I can compare the 2.

I've downsized quite a lot of my gear. I was using the g sys with the road king 2 and was pretty happy until I got fed up with lugging the big pedalboard about so I decided to buy some good old fashioned stomp boxes. Went for the new TC tone print pedals which do sound pretty good to me.

Anyone else using them with the Mark V?

Thanks again

Paul

I don't regret purchasing my MkV combo either....at all. It is incredibly versatile, easily transportable (not nearly as heavy or bulky as other beasts I have owned), and sounds great for all of my needs!!

I've always been in favor of heads on the stage. Over 20+ years of hearing 4x12's behind me, there's no turning back. I save the combo for the homefront and use the addition of a 4x12 if I want a bigger sound there. Or, just use my other heads at home. 8)
