i did a lot of multi-level compression and limting on these tracks.
very mild, but across the board, i had plug ins on the guitar buss, guitar tracks, the bass buss, the bass tracks (2), the vocal buss, drum tracks and drum buss, and of course, a special dual-parallel compression setup on the master buss, along with a limiter catching up to 2db peaks.

kept the overall master peak at -7db, which is typically a bit hotter than i usually keep myself too, only, now i'm experimenting with hotter premastered levels, and i'm liking it.
i think the mastered RMS average on this is only around -12db, so i could still push it harder if i wanted to....

this song was inspired by an ex-family member on the wife's side, stealing from the father, who has dementia.

cool song man! from your description, you're using a lot of compression, but it sounds great.

THANKS KIFF......
well, on the compression...

i use it very sparingly, but in multiple levels.

i'll put a mild compressor on the input of the bass, for example....
probably knocking down 2 or 3 db at most, at about 4:1, medium fast attack, medium fast release, just kissing the peaks....
then, on mixdown, i'll add ANOTHER compressor on the track, but more gentle still, just to round it out, and i'll put a limiter on, and stop the top 2db of peak, and drive the track a little harder.
then, on the bass Buss, i'll have a really gentle compressor, usually two back to back in parallel.
so thats 4 compressors and a limiter, JUST on the bass track!
LOL

but, if you took any one of them out of the signal chain, you'd hardly be able to notice.

i think that layering gentle compression and limiting, sounds better than one brute force compressor.

this has been a big experiment for me, that's taken about 3 years of constant mixing to decide on....

love it. solos have and I Mother Earth kinda feel to it. good job my friend, i enjoy listening to your awesome recordings.
