I'm looking for a decent mic for recording my Stiletto Ace Combo amp.
I will be going direct into a Korg 12 track digital home recorder.
Up until now I have been using the Direct Out on a Roland to the Korg but now I really want to record my Mesa to capture the true sound of my speaker. I'm looking for a good value at a reasonable price.
This will be used strictly for home recording purposes.
I would rater ask the Boogie Board that someone at a GC who just wants to sell me anyhing.

Thanks,

i'll give you the standard reply of Shure SM-57. been a standard for guitar recording for decades now and its usually under $100 unless youre getting ripped off.

i'm heading out now to get some strings and picks, maybe ill take a quick look at the mic prices while i'm there, i'm using a 57 but looking to add a mic to my collection for diversity's sake.

Yeah, if you're looking for affordable, there's really no reason not to start with an SM57...

If you want to take a step up from the SM-57, which is only a standard now because they're cheap, then a giant leap will be the Heil PR-20 or PR-22. Unlike Shure microphones the Heils don't have a hump around 1.5K and they don't cut off the bottom end at 300K. The PR-22 has far less handling noise than the 20 and both are the same price, about $139.

If you want to take a huge step up then either the PR-30 or PR-40 is the way to go. They price between $250 and $350.

All of the Heils have very flat response, better GBF than most mics and excellent rear side rejection qualities. SPL handling is in excess of 150db.
Any of these mics will also work very, very well for other duties including drums and vocals. Not one trick ponies by any means.

I agree the SM-57 would be a good choice to start with, If you can find an old AKG 3000 they seem to work very well with the simu 90/90 power amp.
