Brought the combo home! And after all the footswitch issues were taken care of I was able to really hear the beast take action.

I hooked it up through a 4x12 mesa recto cab with c90 speakers. Here is my signal path:

Ibanez Jem (breeds)
boss tuner
bad horsey 2 wah
Analog man silver TS9
Keely TS9
Boss CS2

LOOP-
Carbon Copy
Boss DD6
Boss chorus

I was coming from the JSX head, and I was happy with it, but I felt there was more feeling and clarity of gain i needed, so the mark V combo it was!
I am pleased with the sounds it has, they all seems so nice and full. Using the EQ I was able to get some really crushing tight gain on channel 3 (90w extreme) Lead playing on this channel was awsome, very articulate.
The combo looks a little goofy, and I dont really like the sound of a 5th speaker (yet :) so I may go with the head, but overall this thing really boogies!

One thing I did notice is that I have the gain pretty dimed on channel 3, and it still sounds pretty loose. I am in the pentode mode. and the EQ is in classic V with the low end pretty high up there on the sliders. I still feel like I need more gain though!

Any way Im pretty happy to be a MESA owner and want to use this thing for all its got!

Extreme mode has a little less apparent 'gain' than Mark IV mode. You if you raise your treble (and, to some degree, mid) controls, you can add more gain to the mix.

The bright switch will also increase the apparent gain of the third channel.

gonna give that a shot. what i haev found with Mesa, is that the slightest tweak in a control will make a BIG difference. I must learn to use everything with taste.

Have you tried disconnecting the combo speaker and just using the 4x12? Open back cabs with gobs of gain do not sound good to my ears. Read your manual, especially the part about the bass pot and high gain. Don't be afraid to experiment with EQ setting other than the "classic V", the 240 Hz slider can really do wonders for muddy bass response.

Yes I favor just the 412 being plugged in. when the combo speaker is plugged in too, it fills the room nicely, but it thins things out consideribly.

And I think your right. Im gonna try more unique setting on the EQ (which is a very powerful tool). Again as stated before, I realyl believe that we must EQ with our ears, and not our eyes. This keeps getting in my way. I keep thinking I need to see it a certain way for it to work, and the forces of actuallity and my assumptions keep getting tangled up...

Have you tried the pre-set mode for the sliders? I tend to use them but use the sliders for my clean channel to give more punch. JMO try it out if you have already.
