So, I know I haven't spent a ton of time tweaking my dual rec head yet, and that could be a large part of the issue here, but I can't seem to get a good lead tone from it. In all honesty, it makes my neck pickup, especially, sound like a pickup you'd hear in a Wal-Mart guitar. It's not smooth at all. I'm thinking I may have to invest in a rack EQ unit to place in the effects loop to reduce the highs and get some mids in there. The range of frequencies that the MID knob controls seems a tad different than most other amps. It's definitely useful, because without it, the amp sounds dead, but I still can't seem to get anything close to a creamy lead. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Yup... turn down your amp gain and hit the front end with a tube screamer or some sort of boost. Hell, even a graphic EQ with some raised mids and the overall level dimed ought to get you pretty close.

If that doesn't work, just use lots of delay and obscure the hell out of your tone, lol!

Ain't that the truth... Believe me, I want a Mark, but I got my dual rec used for $900. I was a deal that was too good to pass up. I really like it for the most part, despite its lacking lead tone.

thow a clean boost in front and an MXR 10 band EQ in the loop. You can get there.
I had a Rectoverb for a while and using those 2 pedals with it I got a lead tone that I really liked.
Of couse now I have mark IV and the lead tone is kind of "built In"

If you want a killer lead tone you should try a Carvin Legacy II. I've had a MKIV, Lonestar Classic, Rectoverb, and Now a Stilletto Deuce II and the new Legacy's kill every one of them for lead tone. Forget the Vai tone... it nails Eric Johnson stuff with ease. Just an amazing lead tone. The lower gain clean and boost channels are even better.... Seriously.... listen to Sisters or Boy from Seattle by Vai and you'll hear exactly what this amp sounds like on the clean and boost channels.... but we're just talking lead tones here. Seriously. I love Boogies and they have their place but if you seriously want a killer lead sound like I did... check one of these out. It was a tone altering move for me. BTW I do want to keep my Deuce just because.
