Well I just got back from a gig. It was an outside benefit concert w/6 bands to raise money for a family that had a 3yr old and her Grandmother burned in a house fire.
It turned out to be in the mid 40s when we went on. I was worried about this going in and playing in cold weather is definitely tough.
Started getting warmed up and we were having a good time....crowd of probably 60 to 70 that were still braving the weather (we were the last band) were having a good time and interacting with us.

We get almost done with the 6th song and the power blows.
They couldn't fix it so that was that.

I am bummed, but at the same time I saw some good things in this experience. We were having fun and moving around (stage pres with our singer and bass player is an issue). It sounded good and we were getting a lot of compliments and a crowd reaction that was encouraging. So not a complete loss. This was the 5th time playing out with this line up and things seem to be headed in a good direction.

Bummer about the loss of power. But like you say, it sounds like the chemistry was good so it wasn't a total loss. That's very cool. The next few times you play everything will really come together for you guys.

Was there some decent money collected for the family?

This band is in somewhat of a weird spot right now. From my perspective anyway. We started in June and have played out 5 times. Only one was a paying gig for us. The next show is an opening slot in a pretty popular bar downtown that we have played before. We will get a cut of the door.
We have a decent set list going and it is time to start looking for the paying bar gigs to play all night, but we don't have a demo disc to really promote ourselves with booking people. Plus, all of the leg work for everything outside of rehearsal and gig time has fallen into my lap. I could go on and on here, but in a nutshell....I have been having doubts of how much I really want to keep putting into it because I am not sure if it is going to pay off. For all the things I find annoying, at the end of the day I like these guys and when we are playing and things sound and feel good I couldn't imagine not sticking with it. I guess I have to focus on that and keep plowing ahead. Sorry for the rant....done venting now.

As for the benefit I do not know what was raised, but I have to imagine it was a decent amount. They really put on a well organized event and there were quite a few people there throughout the day. The generator cutting out was no fault of theres. **** happens :(

Boogieslide,

I can sympathize with you about all the running around. That's what I do in my band as well. Between website, bookings, running sound, it all adds up. But, there is nothing better for your playing than doing it live. In the end, its still fun or I wouldn't do it. For what it's worth, a demo may help, but it's not always required. We have gotten most of our gigs from word of mouth of the bar owners and people who have seen us at other places. We have a pretty good schedule now of playing out twice a month. We all work fulltime so that is a good pace for us. It keeps it fun. We did do a demo of five songs in one day, but it sounds like we did five songs in one day! No time for overdubs or fixes. I just picked up a digital recorder, so I am looking forward to getting some more stuff recorded, this time on our schedule.
Good luck and keep at it, the gigs will come.
