Can you take any mesa head and take the outer shell off and use it as a rackmount? If not, can you get certain heads as rackmounts, and which ones? How much rack space would it take? I've never owned a half/full stack, so I'd appreciate any help.[/b]

The Mark series (short heads) can be put into the mesa rackmount kit.

Amps like the rectifiers were made in rackmount form a while back...

Yes, and no. Any 17" chassis from a short head, or combo from Mesa will fit into their rackmount adapter.
Some of the Mark series, and Caliber series were available in long and heads to match cabinet sizes.
They do make the heads available as rackmount, or you can buy the adapter & do it yourself.
