Hi

just got the M5 - and what an incredible amp it is. Just one question on the channel 3 "Extreme" setting. I'm finding that this setting is quite a bit louder than the other two - but it has a whole lot LESS gain than MkIV and IIC+. Is there a secret combination to unlock the mayhem, is it how it's supposed to sound, or did I get a lemon....?

Thanks

Read the owners manual.
Gain does not mean saturation. Extreme mode is less saturated than the other two modes but the volume jump you hear is in fact more gain.

Its normal. Bump up the presence and gain and then the treble if needed. The volume jump is there because in the extreme setting the negative feedback is removed from the power amp. All amps get louder the less negative feedback they have at the same master settings.

Yes - I was also referring to the manual where it states, "EXTREME is the most radical and over the top sound in the Mark V. Just when you think you've heard it all in the Mark IV Mode, EXTREME comes up to challenge all you thought you knew about in-your-face, aggressive sounds. ...."

To me that's a declaration of just pure filth and super saturation (or gain - depending on the stage). I get the NFB thing and used to like that sound w/ my M4. But, the manual just creates an expectation that one would walk away soiled from the amount of pure grind. Don't get me wrong - I actually like the fact that it's a bit less saturated - I just wanted to make sure that I'm not playing a lemon.

Thanks for the clarification! Enough typing fer me - must get back to boogie.... ;-)
