I'm reading a number of criticisms about the Mark V Combo sound. Has anybody tried installing a (vintage) EVM 12L in one yet?

Curious to know... :?:

I'm sure it would help... the later Mark's were designed with EV's in mind. Although my Mark IV doens't sound the best in combo format w/ EV's, but better than the celestion. It sounds incredible with an EV cab, whether it's a 1x12 or 2x12 or the mix of celestion/EV like they used to do. That mix, to me, sounds the best for Mark's.

I may have contributed to this. I'm just not a fan of the combo. A closed back cab with the head fits my playing style (heavier styles of guitar). It doesn't mean they are no good. Just doesn't meet my need. That's all.

I am going to try it when mine arrives, but I think I'll end up with the C90 in the combo, using my 12L Thiele for complimentary sound. :)

I assume you mean chugga-chugga-meshuga/pantera sounds? Super sub low punchy palm muting?

Well, reading your post I decided to guitar break off work and check - I have several EV loaded cabs, including a 1x12 EV open back and a 1x12 EV Thiele. Personally, I like the Mark Combo with the MC90 best, but I'm not a heavy metal guy at all. For all sounds on my side of the Insane Clown Posse, the combo is a lot more versatile, IMO.

An EV would help - it's a little punchier, a little more defined in the top, and compressed less (er.. none). If it's chugga-chugga you want, I don't think it'll get you where you want though with a single EV in an open back config though, after comparing the the Theile cab to the open back cab. The sealed and ported Thiele cab definitely adds the oomph.

I also have a half back vert 2x12, wide body, loaded with non-mesa stamped EVs. THAT gets it there. So, I think you need two EVs...

Of course, this all begs the question that you are going to play loud, right?

Personally, I don't understand the whole deal with people needing so much low end out of their guitar rig. I hope your bass player has a a tube SVT with the 8x12 cab, that you've got adequate hearing protection, that your drummer plays with 2Bs and that the sound guy doesn't hate you after all that ;)

Hope this helps.

I'm planning on selling the two 1x12cabs and getting the new front ported MC90 cab... I've always got my 2x12 EV cab, and might swap an EV for a MC90 in each pair. Dunno.

No, not really.

I think the EVM 12L is one of the best speakers around. I have them in thieles, open backs and combos and find them to be more tone-neutral than most and definitely preferable to the C90 in an open back configuration. I love a V30 in a sealed cabinet as well and would love to see (hear) a roadking 4x12 (2 - v30 sealed and 2 - c90 open) with EVM's in place of the C90's.

I wish they still made them (like the vintage 12L's).
