JJ's lasted 2 years in my Tri, and to be honest it's all to easy to trust to one mans idea of a quick fix amp 'set'.....I am now totally a NOS convert, and with out having the time at the moment to tell you why...all I can say it's like night and day!! the difference..really is...you have to try...you will never Ever look back.

So in conclusion keep your new production and your valve kits! I don't mean that to rubbish Bob I found him a great guy to talk to! but he like us has to make a living, and his living is making it easy to revalve and be cost effective...

A quick question.....
what do you like for el84's in your 20/20?
I'm looking to try something other than JJ or Mesa in my Cal22+, although both of these have been pretty good... :D

If you are talking about EL84s, those TAD ones are pretty decent IME...

A tube dealer that has only one line of tubes limits your options. Tube Depot has many many tubes and can mix tubes for a variety of tones. There is no one perfect set of tubes for all tones, so a guy can't just say, this is the magic bullet, all of my brand of tubes. I guess he can say that  Does not mean they don't have great service and a good product. I would check a variety of places, lots of businesses have knowledgeable people and good products. One choice is not much variety.

Like the old saying goes.... "If the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail".

I know Eurotubes' power tubes work great in Mesas. I used them in my 50/50 and recently ordered some for my 20/20. Any of the guys I've spoken to at Eurotubes have been helpful and cool.

Eurotubes' website says that you can "get the bias up where it should be with warmer grades of tubes." What I don't get is how the JJ's can work in my 20/20, or how they worked in my 50/50 for that matter, even though I didn't adjust the bias in either power amp.

The only thing I can compare this to is gasoline and octane. My wife's Corolla was made to run on 87 octane. Putting in 93 octane will not boost performance because there were no changes made to the compression ratio of the engine. Now if we installed some high compression pistons and compared 93 octane versus 87 octane, we would notice the car runs much better on 93.

So how can "hotter output tubes" warm the bias up if you don't adjust the bias?

Well.....The bias is determined by the tubes and the amp.
Every tube is slightly different from it's brothers and sisters. They are not linear devices that all sound or work the same.
This is how Mesa sells tubes that fit in their amps. They basically tell the manufacturer what they want to see for current draw in the tubes and then they test them to make sure that they are within spec.
The way any tube seller does it is usually by using a tube tester or some sort of characterizer that will tell them just what the characteristics of the tubes are. They sell the ones that will bias within the Mesa range as being for Mesa amps. The reality is, they simply run the same voltages through the tubes that a Mesa amp has and then pick out the ones that will be properly biased with the applied voltages.

www.aikenamps.com has some really good information in the Tech Pages link.

I used them primarily for my power tubes of a pair of 50/50's and a 20/20. The 50/50's instantly had a more noticable depth and "character" for lack of a better word. The 20/20 took a bit of tweaking to get them to sound proper, esp. after having just completed the deep mod at the time. In the end though I found that the 20/20 also like the JJ's thicker tones.

Got the JJ's installed in the 20/20 and immediately noticed a change. Fuller, more 3-D, and richer about sum things up. The Digitech GSP 1101 was sounding pretty damn good.

I just bought the 6L6/KT77 High Gain Option for my Mark IV and absolutely love them. I had an issue with USPS claiming they had delivered my package when they didn't. The guy at Eurotube was more then willing to help in any way possible. A+++
