I picked up a Rectoverb Series 2 head a little while ago and I'm thinking about trying out EL-34s - probably Siemens NOS from Mesa since they're actually $25+ cheaper than regular labeled NOS Siemens tubes online.

The thing is, the stock 6L6's barely clear the top of the amp (as I'm lining up the pins to drop them in, the glass isn't too far from the top of the chassis). Would I need to pull out the chassis to install most EL-34's? I would think that Mesa would have designed the chasis to clear both tube types.

Anybody have an experience with this?

The 6L6s (stock Mesa and Philips 7581s) and EL34s (SED) i've used have both been about the same height. You shouldn't have any problems.

Then again, i have a Dual Rectifier, so YMMV.

thanks for the help guys.

for some reason EL-34's look so much taller so I just wanted to make sure.

I'll probably order a set of Siemens EL34's and give em a shot

I've got a single Rect and have had no problems changing tubes. I've got MESA's EL34's and 6L6's and Eurotubes 6's and E34L's. Everything went fine. Just make sure to flip the Bias switch!
