ED + THD Hotplate?

New ED owner here, and loving it!

Just curious, though.

Has anyone used a Hotplate, or any other kind of attenuator on the ED for more gain saturation/sustain? If so, what was the result?

I know Boogies really like to sing when cranked, but I wouldn't want to shell out the dough if there's not a signifigant difference.

I use a hotplate with my setup.

I go back and forth with it. At bedroom volumes it will make no difference. There is a misconception that attenuaters let you get cranked tones at bedroom volume. I have yet to hear that. When you attenuate so much that you get bedroom volume, the tone loss is to great and you aren' pushing your speaker hard enough.

Where I think the attenuator shines with the ED is in two scenarios

1. I set my amp up so there is less gain then I normally like. I then crank it past noon until that gain that I was missing gets added back. This of course will push you past drummer level and into drown out drummer level. I then attenuate back down to drummer level.

The extra gain added by cranking it is so sweet and different then the gain you get from the preamp.

2. Setting up the hotplate as a loadbox and running the slave out into my axe fx where I setup speaker cabinet simulators and can run it into my mixer.

I use a Hotplate and it doesn't really help in adding gain. I know the amp sounds great loud and it really screams but when you bring it down with the hotplate it really takes away from it IMHO. Although you can adjust for this, i add more treble and presence and the hotplate has a bright and depth switch, i also boost the crap out of the amp with a BB+. If i couldn't use a boost pedal i would have sold the amp already. While it sounds great, it just doesn't have enough gain at low volumes.

I have to agree. The classic Boogie rich, spongy saturation has to be obtainable for me, regardless of how pristine and neccessary the clean is.

Based on the research alone, I seem to be leaning towards the OCD, with the BB+ in a close second....we'll see come test drive day.

Do you find that the OD of your choice compensates completely for the lower gain the ED comes with?-----And what style(s) do you play?

I play hard rock, metal, still try to shred :lol: Using the BB+ keeps me happy with the Electra Dyne and you can use the amp at low volumes with an OD pedal without a hotplate. You just have to be careful with the master and just inch it up, it gets LOUD fast as we all know.

Whenever i have the house to myself i blast the amp. But even then, i don't turn it up more than 11 o'clock, it's soo damm loud at that point.

How would you compare the BB+ to the OCD?

Which one would be ballsier at a lower volume while still retaining tone?
