I have a Mark 1 Single Rectifier. On channel two I have the pre-amp at about nine O'Clock. I prefer to have as much power tube saturation as possible so I keep the pre-amp output low so I can have a bit more power-amp overdrive.

on my single I ran output at like 2 o'clock and then brought my channel masters up to that sweet spot JUST as it started to deterierate. Know what I mean? That was the only way I liked it. Lots of power tube growl. Personal taste though I guess.

Just to clarify: When you bypass the effects loop, the channel masters become your master outputs, I prefer this tone! When the loop is engaged, the channel masters become effects send level controls, which can be fine tuned with the send control on the rear panel! Turning up the channel masters can drive that (one) preamp tube for more distortion, but I would'nt call it preamp volume! :?
