I'm running my Single Rec through a 90's 4x12 Peavey 5150 cabinet with Sheffields. I'm looking into getting an oversized Recto cab with V30's. I've never heard my amp through this cab, and don't have a dealer near me. How much different could it possibly sound from the 5150? I like my current cab, but I feel its missing something. Would the Recto cab pair up better and add something to the sound? Sure appreciate any help from you guys as I'm somewhat a Mesa newbie.

Worlds different, and in many's opinion, worlds better. I would not play a Mesa amp through anything other than a Mesa cab.

You will NOT be disappointed.

I had a Mesa Rectifier 4x12 with the Mesa spec V30's for 2 weeks... hated it!
Love my Marshall 1960BV (yep, V30's and no not V30's... get it? lol)!

Honestly there is no comparison. I ran both a Rectoverb head and a Dual Rec through a Peavey JSX 4x12 cabinet (also with Sheffields) - they sounded awful

Pair them with ANY Mesa cabinet and you can't go wrong. Currently the DR is being run through a 2x12 Recto cabinet and the Rectoverb (single rectifier) is running through a Royal Atlantic 27 1x12.

Both cabinets sound awesome.

I even have a Peavey JSX head that sounds awesome through Mesa cabinets but sounds rather lame through the Peavey cabinet.

Don't get me wrong - I love most Peavey gear - especially for live sound - but their 4x12 cabinets are just not that great.

Sometimes those el cheapo cabinets can sound pretty good. I have an old Ibanez "Tone Blaster" 4x12. A friend and I A/B'd it against a Recto slant 4x12 and the differences were minimal. Sometimes you get a gem. :D
My main cab is a Splawn 4x12 with Small Block speakers. It's pretty similar to a Mesa Stiletto cab but a bit warmer.

I have the same peavey and bought a recto cab a couple of months ago. I never use the recto. The peavey blows it away. Much tighter base, more punchy. They sound great together but if I'm running one, its the peavey. I have proved it to a few people who didnt believe me also. I am thinking about trying the marshall cab as well.

Ok ill have to set up a way to record them well. Ill try to do it this week.

I haven't had the chance to setup a proper way to record the cabinets, I didnt some more side by side testing as well as both combined. I am sure that when mic'ing the speakers the results will be different but while just cranking them and hearing them in a room this is what I have noticed......
When cranking up the bass to around 2-3 o'clock and playing some tight riffs (think heavily muted megadeth, metallica riffs) the peavey with the sheffields move some air and rattle your balls while staying tight and punchy. They sounded great. The rec cab with the v30's flubbed out and got harsh.

When I backed the bass to 11-12 the v30's cleaned up quite a bit they also have a mid range "bark" that I think would cut through with a band really well.

Combined they sounded amazing!!!!!!!

I am thinking of experimenting with an x pattern with the v30's and either sheffields or 12t-75's, my only problem is that the v30's are 8 ohm and the sheffields are 16. I wonder if I could rewire the cab so it'll run in stereo with 16 ohm on one side and 8 on the other? Anyone have any suggestions?

Another option which I think would be great is running the peavey 4x12 with a mesa 2x12 on top of it. Then if I start gigging again I could bring just the 2x12 on some gigs.

I really like the Mesa rectifier Straight cabinet I use. It's one of the one from the early 90's with the straight tilted baffle board. I also have a Marshall 1960 loaded with Eminence Texas Heats that I use from time to time, but that cabinet tends to be too bright. One cabinet that I really really liked was playing my DR through a Marshall AX. The old school looking 4x12 with greenbacks. That cabinet really sang. But I like the look of the matching Mesa head and cab.
