Deep Purple - "Highway Star"

my version = "interstate sun 2"

LOL

this is an update to my previous mix....
thought i'd try a whole new approach.

how does THIS one translate?

the big experiment continues....
kudos to XENOPHILE for drums and keys....

blaklynx-
thanks for listening and commenting!

on the original:
you know, we've all listened to this recording for, well, forever!
LOL
so, everybody knows the sound of it, the recording...

having that big hotel, having all those big rooms, lots of marble floors, space to 'move out', add room mics, man, it's a dream come true.

granted, live recording in a big room, can get messy, i've done it several times.

but with the right gear, and a brilliant engineer, they really found a 'sound' in there.

true to the lyric "with a few red lights, a few old beds, we made a place to sweat"

and you can hear it in those recordings!

LOL

most of my source, was direct, with zero room bleed, so i didn't really have any 'magic' to work with.
but really, that wasn't the point of my effort....

it's just an homage, to a great band that influenced my playing and singing style growing up.

i did a new mix last night...

fattened the rhythm guitar a bit, cut out some 750hz....
tweaked the organ and guitar solos a bit....
really brought the 'snap' of the drums out, and fattened the kick drum.
it sounds more 'modern' now, and not so flat and smacky like the original. (yes, listen to it, it's pretty flat)

so, i'm having someone else master that mix, i'll post it when it's available.

just as a matter of fact..
doing the final mix tonight, having it professionally mastered, will post a new link when it's ready.

most folks wont hear much of a difference, i'm doing a bit hotter mix on the key solos, and a db or so more on the vox overall, and then it's fork time.

Mix sounds good. I like how you have the bass driving it, so to speak. Very present and right up the middle. You said you're bumping up the keyboard solos a bit which I think is a good call too.

I agree with your points on the room. A nice room and proper monitors are a luxury, and arguably more important than mics, pres, etc. A great mic in a crappy room isn't gonna sound great.

lyman

thanks for listening!
glad you dig it......

as far as the recording goes:
i wasn't talking about monitoring environment, tho..

i was strictly talking about tracking..

and the quality of the room and engineering during tracking...

that's what the original had in spades.

i did my guitar parts in a isolation cabinet!!
LOL

and any 'room' sound, i had to artificially create.
i think i did a great job at that....
and nobody except a real sound engineer would ever pick it out...
but me, i appreciate the aesthestics of the original recording.

i think it's important for 'players' to know the difference, myself included.

Yes, the original definitely has that big room sound and it is glorious. What a concept: great players in a nice sounding room playing really good songs! Nah, it'll never work!

I knew what you were saying, I guess I just have monitoring on the brain because I'm mixing some stuff and realizing that it's a big weak link for me.

I wouldn't guess it was an iso cab if you didn't say. Your recordings and mixes always sound really good, man.

lyman-
well, the iso cab tracks required some serious EQ'ing to get it to sound more natural.

not matter what the device, a mic inside a cabinet is going to have a certain frequency that dominates the sound of that track, and it's hard to get rid of.

so i only use the iso cab for certain tracks, or certain frequencies i want in a mix.

here's the actual guitar and setup i used....

on the solos, i have blended miced cabs with the iso cab....
on the rhythm, it's a single track, straight off the iso cab.

Nice work. I still love my Mark IIB bought new way back when. Yours sounds a lot like mine.
