Just finished my morning practice b4 going to slave for the man....

Must say I am feeling much love for my fav new effect, this little Barber Tone Press. I have not used compressors in the past, couldn't find the one I liked. With this one it is possible to get into that zone where it is working but not oppressing the sound. Jammed a little while on Dire Straits 'Once upon a time in the west'. It lets the blues dynamics flow but juices it up just enough to make it sweet. Best money I have spent in a while.

Hey guys, I'm looking at compressors and I think I have it down to the Tone Press or maybe the Retro-Sonic compressor.
Have any of you compared these two? Also, I've read some reviews about the Barber and some folks say it's noisy. Is this the case and if so is it just at high settings? I've heard that most compressors are noisy at high settings, I don't know because whatever I get will be the first one I've had. Just trying to get some feed back from users since these things are hard to try before you buy. Thanks.

Hmmm.... I was not able to try out a Recto Sonic Comp. So many compressor brands and everybody wants to sell online. :(
I use about 2/3 mix of the compression signal on mainly cleans or low saturation with the effect at about 30-40% dialed in. I have not noticed any noise with it. I only tried good and reputable units, (Barber/Diamond/Keeley) and did not find noise in any of them at the moderate level I use them. Can't say I maxed any of them out since I don't like that artificial squished sound.

Good luck on your tone quest.

I will be following this thread for education's sake - after more than 30 years, I confess I have not actually found a use for compressors. I've tried several, and it just seems that by the time I find an actual alteration in the tone, it just sounds like Boston. Sorta fuzz box all the way up.

Maybe you guys and gals will help an old fart learn new noises.

I think the retro sonic is just a Ross clone. The Retro Sonic stuff is very good too.

I think with compressors the real test is can you get clean sustain without sounding squashed?

Only compressor I've found that beats the Tone Press is CMATMODS Deluxe Compressor or Deluxe Signa Comp. His 4 knob comps have an attack control that lets you get sustain while avoiding the squishing that comes so easily with most comps. It's quite a trick to get sustain without distortion.

I see Lincoln Nebraska. I lived in Omaha for a while. Seems there was a football team that wore alot of red that folks were pretty crazy about. Them Huskers gonna have a football team in the top 20? A return to the glory days :D

Even my guitar playing has gotten better since TO brought Bo in!

i use my tone press as a Clean Boost, as well.
