Just a (maybe stupid) short question .. can I use the FX Send of a combo to go directly into a tube poweramp? I'm kinda new to tube amps and just wanted to make sure this doesn't fry my amps or something ^^

Just make sure that your power section from the combo is connected to a speaker or other "load" so you don't blow out the power section in the combo.

FWIW, you really should not need to run from the combo to another poweramp unless you are trying to make a stereo or w/d/w rig.

Most people want to get power tube distortion and most combos are lower watts which means power tube distortion happens at lower perceived volume.

Also note that a 100 watt amp is twice as loud as a 10 watt amp. Yes a 10 watt amp, no typo. You have to up the watts by a multiple of 10 to double the volume. There is not very much difference in volume between a 100 watt amp and a 50 watt amp. The difference is the power tube distortion happens sooner with the 50 watt amp.

One famous studio guitarist in his live rig mics up his combo then sends the mic line to a mixer/effects rig then sends that in stereo to two powered speakers. This configuration is a form of wet/dry/wet.

Enough bs, good luck with getting your rig set up.

You can use the Slave Out as well. it is taken right off the output transformer, so you get the whole amp from input jack to speaker output in the signal.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful! 8)
unfortunately my amp doesn't have a slave out, that's why I was asking.
btw I know that combos do usually have good poweramps in them, it's just that all the combos i've got are solid state, and now that I have an all tube rack system i was just wondering what those amps would sound like through an actual tube poweramp and a 4x12 cab with v30s in it.

oh before I forget ... do solid states have to have a load connected as well or can they handle operation without a speaker?

I ran a Fender Metalhead for many years... it has a direct to mixer line out.

I recorded many a track with no speaker load hooked up to it and it is still fine to this day.

So in summation... SS amps, yes... tube amps, hell no.

I use the send from the efx loop on many of my amps...works wonders and ups the volume and tone big time. Amps should have a speaker load always just to be safe. Use your ears...if it sounds odd or bad, then something is messed up...recheck your connections and always start with the volume down low.Good Luck and have fun.

Don't run any power amp without a load on it. You're just asking to blow it.

Dunno how that guys Metalhead is still alive. By all logic it should be dead right now.
