i see that mesa is touting improved clean tones on their latest generation of Dual Recs. has anyone heard the cleans on one of these yet, and if so, do the cleans meet Mesa's claims? better yet, can you tell me how they stack up to the cleans on a tremoverb?

Personally I think the Tremoverb cleans sound better. (As well as every other sound on it.) I know a lot of people say the 3-channel Rectifier cleans are much better than the 2-channel, but I'm the other way round - I think the 3-channel cleans are sterile and harsh, even though they're 'cleaner' than the 2-channel. The Tremoverb is better for clean than the straight 2-channel too.

For what it's worth he's making the wrong comparison with Pushed vs. Blues, because Pushed uses the same channel and gain structure as Clean, which is different from all the modes on the Tremoverb. The Tremoverb's modes all use all the gain stages, so Clean and Blues are closer to Raw on the 3-channel. (The Tremoverb and 2-channel Rectifier are really *one* channel amps with complex switching, whereas Channel 1 on the 3-channels uses a different signal path.)

The cleans on a newer Dual Recto are cleaner and brighter with more headroom. They're a separate signal path that's meant to produce good clean tones.

The cleans on the older Dual Rectos are warmer and dirtier with less headroom. All the clean switch does on the 2 Ch Duals is bypass a couple of gain stages.. thus you're still using the vintage or modern high gain (depending on how you have the cloning switch setup) signal path and tone stack.

I actually like the cleans on the old Dual Rectos, in large part because I like thick cleans that aren't all that clean.

The cleans on the newer ones are also good, particularily if you like brighter, spankier clean tones or lust after very clean tones with no breakup.
