I've been curious about trying these for a while but don't know where to start.
I am a classic hard rock (late 60's to mid 70s) player so I pretty much stay on the Crunch mode. In other words, my favorite guitar tones lean more to the vintage types.
So given the amp I'm using and what I play can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Thanks

I absolutely LOVE the 1960's Telefunken 12ax7 I use in V1.
I have also tried Amperex (Bugle Boy) and RCA greyplate in V1 as well and they all smoke the newer tubes.
The Tele gets the nod, however, IMHO.

I also hear awesome comments about GE, Raytheon, Philips and Sylvania.

I could use the old tubes in V2 as well, but I like the standard JJ 12ax7 there as it tames the infamous "Stiletto brightness".

YMMV.....
Good luck! :D

I'm not surprised that you replied as you have a great mind for these things

Anyway, where would I go to buy these NOS tubes.
For the past few years I've be using the Doug's Tubes pre amp kit with the Tung Sol reissue in V1 and JJ in V2. It's been the best I've found so far myself.
I'm totally green to the NOS scene. Would you recommend trying something in VI only? It make sense to me.

On a side note. I am thrilled about the Scumback M75 speaker I just put into on of my 2x12 cabinets. They sound so good with the Deuce. For my taste at least :)

V1 is the first stage for 4 out of 6 modes in the Stiletto. Exceptions are Fat clean and Fluid drive....these use V2 for the first stage. (And yes, generally the first stage has the most effect.)
However, even then, the next stage goes through V1 so you still get some effect on all modes.
Like I say, I get good results with the JJ in V2. Some folks don't like 'em and I think they would be too dark if put in multiple positions, but they seem "just right" in V2 alone. The other stages won't matter as much.

And remember, V3 and 4 have cathode follower circuits in place and some tubes (Russian made Mesa for example) may not work properly in those sockets. I have experimented but leave V3 on up as stock (preamp tubes anyway).

I also have tried the new TungSol in V1 and I liked it....lotsa gain, not too bright, but nothing new production made matches the warmth and natural compression (think violin sound) of the Telefunkens that I have acquired. Even then, there were variations and I can not tell you exactly which ones I have. (Markings fade over time although mine have the 'famous' diamond impression on the tube bottom).

You are not the first one to say good things about the Scumback speakers, but I have/use various Celestions with my Ace...all sound good to me, but the V30 is a bit bright for a Stiletto, IMO. 8)

So how is the weather today in Minn.? I was just there last month (in your airport anyway, in route back from Wis.)
Sure was cold! :p

Good luck! :D

Good stuff indeed!

I did a quick Google search see that there are several sources out there.
When the time is right I will pursue it further.

Twin City weather report.
Bright and sunny. 28 degrees.
It's a great day! 8)

Thank you sir!
