if so, what all is involved?

just curious.......
i might want to try it.

In a word yes.I saw photos of a mark 2 sixty watter on e bay(in rather cool black tolex and wicker) that had been modded to take el-34,s or 6l6,s........cool.

thanks bart....

now the question is, how do you do it?

what is involved?

what do i need to change?

No probs, it stated in all the blurb to sell the amp on e bay that the guy selling had modded it himself(as i myself wasn,t aware this was possible)i don,t know how this can be done but it sounds quite cool, must be like having a sixty watter that can be run in class a like a simul class amp!

well, i did a search here, came up with zilch.

i searched the web, for mods in general, and found some cool stuff, but nothing on this specific mod.

is it as simple as a bias mod, and the proper sockets?

or are there tone mods that have to go along with it?

Really i,m not clued up on all the tech stuff, in fact if i knew how i would post the pics off it that i copied from e bay lol. Where the simul class or 60/100 switch would be there was a toggle switch with 6l6 and el34 thats as much as i can clue you up dude.

well, thanks anyway bartchamdoh...

maybe somebody else who's done a similar mod, can chime in on this...

Wouldn't it be easier to sell the MKII and buy a DR or Marshall? I don't think the 2B was designed around that type of tube. You might just go to a bunch of trouble and end up with something that sounds like crap. Honestly, if it was a great idea and easy to do it would probably be posted all over this board.

There are a bunch of people (including me) who love the way the 2B sounds. Sell it and try something else instead of killing the value with a oddball mod.

well, that was no help at all!

LOL

what's wrong with trying to do something unique with my boogie?

i figured if anyone would know how to do a mod like this, it'd be on the boogie board, but i must be wrong.

if i buy a marshall, it'll sound like a marshall.

if i want to keep the pure boogie tone, i can always buy another mark2b.

IF.......... i want to do something unique....

what's wrong with that?
nothing!

you don't have to reply, if you don't have an answer.

ok, that's cool.

i'm just really surprised that it's been so hard to get any solid leads on this.....

i've got a set of Groovetube Substitubes, that allow use of EL84's in the boogie...

and they sound great!

i mean, they're super easy, because they retrofit...

but it's as if, you Blended a Vox AC30, with a Boogie Mark2b...
very cool.

chiimey, but the breakup happens much sooner, so i completely start from scratch with the preamp settings when i record with that setup.....

i think the blend of the EL34 with the Boogie preamp, just may be a magical combo..
but i gotta have some clue as to how to do it!

I'm also suprised you haven't got a response too. I'm no tech, but I thought it would be a reasonably easy mod. I think the sockets are the same. It's mostly a bias issue. I have a Peavey amp that lets you switch between the EL-34/6L6/KT66 with no mods or switches at all. Just pull one tube out and put the other in.

My experience with my Peavey is EL-34s break up MUCH earlier than a 6L6. You'll probably also loose some of the shimmery cleans and big headroom especially at higher volumes.

I'm with you on the EL-84's - great sounding tubes. Actually a nice compromise between the 6l6 and EL34. I really like the DC-3 for that reason.

Good luck on your quest!

Assuming you haven't found this, or other info on your own so far, check out this:

http://www.schematicheaven.com/mods/6l6toel34mod.htm

Be aware that the values may be slightly different in your particular amp, although it all should "be in the same ball park".

This should be easy if you have experience servicing tube amps. If not, by all means take it to a tech to have it done. You don't want to hurt the amp, or worse, yourself!

Good luck :D

fretout-
those yellow jackets ONLY allow the use of EL84's.

maybe you missed that part.

i've got GrooveTubes Substitubes for EL84 use...
i think they're superior to the THD YJ's

oldshred-
that sounds like a possibility...
as long as the transformer is good to go with it....
putting in a BIAS control, and doing the re-wire, that makes the most sense.
