Hello there !

I ordered a RKII a few weeks ago, and I'm about to receive it !

I already have a few cabs and speakers home to try with but I'm considering to buy a new cab for best match with this amp.
The road king 4x12 is very interesting but I've no opportunity to try it !

Are there any owners of the the Road King 4x12 cab who can share their experience ???
Do you thing you greatly take advantage of this half closed half open design ?
How would you describe the sonic difference between close an open sides ?

Do you think there's one side (C90 / V30) you prefer with this amp ???
Did you experiment a lot before choosing the side or does it depend mainly on the music style you're playing.
What about playing both sides at the same time ?

I have a RK 2x12. I prefer my cleans with the C90 and my dirt with both the C90 and V30.

Closed back V30. A bright, aggressive sounding speaker. Punchy, not much headroom.

Open back C90. A full, smooth, less bright speaker. With the open back it just fills the room with sound. Great for cleans. Super punchy, better headroom.

What other cabs do you own?

At least you have some cabs. I picked up my RKII head yesterday, but my 4x12 RK Cab wont be in until mid July. That's what I get for custom ordering. I guess I can run it through one of my combos. Probably sound like crap.

I have a RK 4x12 cab and I love it. It's built like a house, looks good and sounds superb. I use it in my studio, and the ability to use either the V30s or C90s together or alone gives me tons of versatility and the biggest sound I've ever gotten from a single cab of any kind.

I also used to own a RK 2x12 and liked it very well.

It seems there's a long waiting list for these speakers...
If I order one it'll have to cross the ocean ;-)

There's no reason it sounds like crap in my opinion. I intend to use first combos as external speakers too. They have various 12'' celestion speakers...
I'll also try a 2x12 with G12H65, closed back, but I'm not sure it'll be a good match...

One G12h65 2x12 closed back and various combos with various Celestion 12 (G12K80 etc...)
In rehearsal room I can try a Trace Eliot 4x12 closed back (from the period they were selling guitar stuff) probably with celestions in it.

I have two 2x12 RKII cabs. I got them instead of one 4x12 to make it easier to move around and also to use with different amps. I have to say they are the best sounding cabs I have ever played personally. I have an Avatar 2x12 and ordered the Mesa Boogie C90 speaker and put that in there with a V30. Even though it now has the same speakers that are in the RK cab, it doesn't sound as good. Must be something to do with the cab construction or something -- the Avatar is larger and has a 2/3 closed back, 1/3 open so maybe that makes the difference.

I always use both speakers and love the tone. I even use one RK cab with a marshall dsl 401 and love the tone from that. I found my cab and I'm sticking to it! If you can get the 4x12 and don't mind the weight, I say go for it!

According to the Mesa Boogie website, the slanted 4x12 is 109 lbs and the straight 4x12 is 111 lbs. Yikes!

I found my 2x12s to be heavy enough at 63 lbs each.

How heavy are the 4x12s?

Thank God I got the Slant..............that extra 2 lbs would kill my back :D
Here's a pic of my new head. Cab should be here in about 3 weeks.

This is a very nice amp!
I like the color.
I orderered mine black as they said it would be faster to get.
And it's so expensive here in Europe I don't even consider any cusom options...
I plan to stay in NY about a week in July, and one week in Philadelphia for hollydays.
Do you know if there are shops there where It would be possible to try mesa RK cabs ???

The only cab in my opinion for this head is the Road king cab. Mine is the best tone and punch I have ever heard or felt. Go to Rudy;s in NYC at 723 7th ave at the corner of 48th street, fourth floor. Yoy will see full stacks in brown croc, red croc, and you can try out the cabs.
