It would be surprising - you would hear the noise probably all the time, and these part are very abuse resistant.
Other possibilities : bad contact somewhere, leaky or dry filter caps, leaky coupling cap... A reliable distant diagnosis is always difficult to give. If you do not have the tools and knowledge, I think that you ought to take your amp to a qualified repair station.
