When in the loop, the pedal is more efficiant. The smallest tweak makes a huge difference.

For a perfectly clean preamp setting, before or after has very little, if any, difference. For overdriven tones, pre-eq is most effective at cleaning up the distortion tone by reducing bass or treble, but not very effective at enhancing it. For example, adding bass before the preamp will tend to sound muddy. Post-preamp EQ is best for enhancing, such as adding bass or treble without affecting the distortion character. It also is much more effective at overall tone control, such as for scooping.

only bummer is the hum

That's why you need to install the Monte Allums mod kit on the thing. Gets rid of 90% of the pedal's noise.....
+1 love my Allums kit. No hum or noise in my rig.

EDIT: except when I kick on my Direct Drive. that thing is kinda noisey.

if you want to eq your amp's tone and/or get a pure volume increase, put it in the loop. Essentially in the loop it works like a Mesa solo switch and can make everything "1 louder" (only took me 10 years to realize that, DOH! ). If you're looking for a boost however (adding some punch/gain), put it in front and you can also do some tailoring of the tone of your instrument too before it gets to the amp. EVH put them both places I believe, and I could see the benefit of doing so if you don't mind dealing with the extra pedals because it behaves differently in each scenario.

I read a website the other day ranking the best clean boosts on the market, and the GE-7 was #3. The author was touting how well it works in that role and it's not what you'd normally think of when you think of a GE-7.

Is it a newer DD? With the push/pull tone knob? Mine isn't noisy at all, except maybe at full gain or with the compressor in front of it. I also got the 18v power adapter for mine, made a subtle but desirable difference in tone.
