I heard this story from a friend of mine that back then at the 90 Carvin used to sell their own Quad preamp named Carvin Quad X – Amp http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/images/93-quadxamp.html

Anyway, this guy told me it was an almost exact copy from the sound point of view, what do you think ? any one had the chance to try them both ?

Quad-X's are highly coveted among Carvinites. I never played through one but I suspect they were going after Mesa with the built in 5 band EQ. On a related note Carvin has reissued the X-Series tube amps, that also feature a 5 band EQ. I played through a couple back in the 80s-90s and loved them.

Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Carvin was ahead of all the other Mesa immitators by about a decade.

The quad X is not even close in any shape or form in terms of tone. The feature set was comparable but other than that they are completely different preamps.

I have a 90s X100B head in storage and never liked the tone of the Lead channel but remember the clean being a great deal better than the 5150 i was using at the time.

If you want boogie tone on a budget try to find a studio preamp or buy my quad preamp :)

back in the day i had a quad, and tried the carvin at a carvin store for giggles, and it wasnt even close to the boogie.

i've owned the carvin, and i play bass opposite a quad a couple of times a week. i'm pretty farmiliar with both, and i'll tell you that the carvin is pretty good, but it cannot cop the mojo of the quad. i find the sound of the quad to be superior in every way and by a large margin.

a guitarist i used to play with had a Quad-X and a 50w per channel Crate POS for a poweramp. it sounded aweful for metal. i wish it'd tried it thru my 2:90. it probably would have sounded much better. the quad-x was my dream peice of gear before the mesa bug consumed me.
