Is there an agreed upon best, or can anyone make some suggestions? ROV's only have two tubes right?

Yes, a ROV only has 2 Powertubes.

IMHO the best current production 6L6GC (& EL34) is the SED =C= SV6L6GC.

Don't get me wrong, there are other good brands (Tung-Sol, JJ, TAD etc), but the SED's are top shelf in construction, reliability, and tone.

Thanks Dom!

So what about preamp tubes, do those not require changing? I've never had a tube amp long enough to change tubes. I plan to change that with the ROV.

Preamp tubes will last a very long time. This is where "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies.

If the amp is functioning normally, and not making any strange noises then the preamp tubes are fine.

The Phase Inverter however (not a preamp tube, although it is a 12AX7) IME should be changed with the powertubes, or at the least every other powertube change, YMMV.

Ive tried a few tubes. The SED Winged C are really nice but pricey. If this is your first Tube amp I would recommend going with some TADs or Sovteks first. The reason I say this is that I went through 2 sets of SEDs because when troubleshooting my amp I would forget to reconnect my speaker and blow the tubes... thank god Mesa include a fuse!

But yeah, SEDs just sound awesome, next I would say Sovtek for the price, followed by TADs which I havent tried in a while and looking to put them back in to give them another shot.

Ha! Def not my 1st tube amp but I've never had to change tubes in my previous amps. The ROV's tubes still work but I'm unsure of how long it's had it's current set in there, it may be time for a change (or is it unwise to swap until they go out)?

Unfortunately this IS the 1st time I'll be messing w tubes and such. I don't plan to sell this one or get robbed again so I hope I will be changing this bad boy's tubes for many years to come :)

Ive always used the Mesa tubes, not sure who actually makes them.

I did switch to 6V6s in my Triple recently and love them, they are JJs.

I would suggest that you get a full set for your amp, a lot of the tube folks have kits for your amp and give descriptions of different tube sets. It doesnt hurt to have a second set on hand in case you have problems and go by Home Depot and pick up a couple of fuses also.

I cant remember having a power tube failure, but I do go thru V1s for some reason on a couple of my amps, its always good to have a couple of spares with you just in case.

Good Luck

I strongly advise, if you put 6v6's, not to put your amp on silicon/bold.

Using all JJ quad matched (not the factory ones) on power section and all factory tubes with a tung-sol (v1) on the preamp section.

Rectoverb doesn't have silicon/bold switch.... it's just silicon/bold.... no tube rectifier in Rectoverb.

I've used JJ's in mine and they sound good. Any other brand 6L6's i can't tell you about. I also ran mine in EL34 bias mode without any issues. I felt it sounded better. You run this setting at your own risk.

I currently have Winged C EL34's that sound really good (amp in EL34 bias mode).
