I played this amp tonight and I kind of liked it.

I've been reading here about other amps and I was wondering how one tells a "transistory" sound from a "pure" sound?

One thing I've noticed with the tube amps that I have played is that the distortion at low volumes doesn't sound, for lack of a better term, "creamy" enough for what I'd like.

Does that change when the volume goes up? Is it absolutely necessary to crank the gain on every amp for "metal" solo and rhythm tones?

Well from my experience most tube amps need to be cranked up to really shine. Gotta get those tubes hot. Refering to your question about gain needing to be cranked for metal, well most metal is just that High Gain.
