+1 on the THD Hotplate. I used an 8 ohm model for a couple of years and sold it on eBay. Ultimately, I didn't like what it did for my tone. My alternative has been to use a rack effects unit with the output turned down. That keeps my volume levels tolerable anywhere and retains full tone. Regardless, though, cranking a set of speakers sounds a lot different (and better), I just can't play that loud all the time!

I use a rock crusher on my roadster. I like it very much. I previously sold a hotplate that i had used on my lonestar because I wasn't happy with the tone.
