Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of getting a THD Hotplate so I can crank my new Express 5:25 head for better tone at bedroom friendly levels. When i have the gain up at really low levels the amp sounds a bit fizzy- i guess i'm not getting any mojo from the power valves just gain from the preamp section.

Anyone here used a THD or any of the competitors? Some people love them, others seem to hate them.....

Thanks,

Paul

I couldn't play my Stiletto Ace at home without a HotPlate. You're not going to get your great high gain tone at bedroom levels. You'll get another tone that you may or may not like. Putting an outboard graphic eq in your effects loop can help.

The THD Hotplates are nice looking, built well and I hear that they work well. My only complaint with THD is they don't give you selectable ohms. Many other companies build them where you can run 4, 8 or 16 ohms.

If used to better control your volume levels at gigs or rehearsals I think they work great. At so called bedroom levels don't expect great sound and presence. Any attenuator will fall short there but they will do the job. If you don't have a small at home practice amp and can't play low enough not to piss off the neighbors I would highly recommend an attenuator. :D
