I am really interested in trying out other 12ax7 tube combinations, but I am am trying to research as much as possible to find with 12ax7 tubes will suit my liking with the ED specifically (because I don't have the money to buy all different types). I've read great things about Preferred Series 7025's and I'm tempted to try them out based on reviews. I really love the natural sound of the Electra Dyne, but I find myself trying to eq or manipulate with pedals the higher mid range frequencies. I'd rather just run straight into the head and use tubes solely. I really like a higher frequency "chime" (think Hiwatt) but the instant it get slightly harsh or have any "ice pickness" it immediately turns me off. I find more of the harsher frequencies are connected to the mid range (as I tun is down that edgy harshness goes away but I lose articulation and attack), I can seem to find the right compromise of Mid, Treble, and Presence without me being unhappy with one area. I'm thinking different 12ax7 tubes may help fix this problem since I find this harshness to be fairly consistent across different mesa gain channels on serveral amps (Rectos, Stilettos, Express' etc. but the ED has less than most). I've read NOS 12ax7's have more rounded off higher end frequencies but I don't know if this is what I'm looking for. I want a Hiwatt like articulate chime with smoother high mids, a "punch you in the gut" lower mids and really tight bass. I'm also planning on switching out the 6L6's with Tung-Sol EL-34's which may help the issue as well. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Shoot Mike an email and ask his opinion. He has a good selection. I've tried some of his NOS tubes. I really like the RFT 12AX7's, but they may not be what you are looking for.
