Anyone tried a Shiva next to an Electra Dyne

Every once in a while I make a music store run and try the different amps out there. And so far every time I walk away feeling there is nothing out there yet that suites my tastes as well as the Electra Dyne. Messed with a Peavey 6505 on Sunday. Probably the best metal amp I have ever played. Not my bag though. Atleast not this week ;-)

The one exception was when I tried a Bogner Shiva a couple months ago. Really liked that amp. Not saying I rate it better for my taste, but I really liked it. Would have been nice to side by side it with an ED.

Not having an ED right next to it, I got the impression it had more gain on tap and had a little less low end. But without having the amps side by side in the same environment it is hard to tell (the low end thing, it DEFINATELY had more gain).

Sounded like it did a real nice midgain as well.

Honorable mention goes to the Suhr Badger. Great amp!

Anybody ever try these to amps side by side, or atleast try both enough times to offer an opinion on how the two amps compare?

Primal,

I'd like to play through both of the amps you mentioned, but they are not available in any stores close to where I live.

You are fortunate to have a store close to you that even carries these amps to allow you to audition them.

I will say that I have listened to a clip by GG exclusively through a Badger on the Suhr Guitar Forum and was blown away with the sound that I heard. Of course, this is GG playing and I am listening through my computer speakers, but WOW!

GG is an awesome guitar player without question.....go to the Suhr Guitar forum and check it out folks.......it is definitely worth the listen IMO!

Yeah I definitely think players who are drawn to the Electra Dyne would also enjoy the Suhr Badger.

They don't sound the same, but they are definately the same type of amp. Both with that old school overdrive. I really enjoyed the clean tone as well, but it is one or the other. It is single channel.

I am avoiding the Suhr forum right now. My S4 has not arrived yet and visiting that forum just makes it feel like it is taking forever.

Suhr sales told me that it is scheduled to be built this month and expected to ship next month. This was two weeks ago they told me this. I ordered it early October last year. The wait is killing me. The only thing that has prevented me from cancelling the order and ordering a new instock one from one of the dealers is that I could not find an S4 with stainless steel frets in stock. I had to have an S4 because I wanted the one peice maple neck, and I had to have the stainless steal frets. I was not to particular about the color and finish. That I would have compromised on. But at this point it is getting close enough that even if I found one I would not cancel. It is better to wait a few extra weeks and get one that has not been handled by music store customers day in and day out. I this point I want it to be a virgin :p

I'll be watching this thread as I am really considering either an Electra Dyne or a Badger. I'm leaning toward the Dyne at this point. I find it odd that you say the Shiva had more gain though. If it was the newer 20th Shiva I guess that might be the case but I owned a Shiva a few years ago and the reason I sold it was because it just didn't have enough gain for me. Great amp though, but needed the money at the time also.
I'd be interested in hearing from someone who has both amps also.

Two reasons I prefer the Electra Dyne over the Badger.

1. You can channel switch between clean and overdrive.

2. Electra Dyne sounded better at low volume. Atleast with my brief experience with it.

As far as the Shiva I tried, I think it was a 20th anniversary because it had the controls on the bottom, not along the top.

Yeah that explains it, they beefed up the gain for the newer shiva's. Would love to try one but very $$$.
Hmmm, I would think the badger would be better at lower volumes because of the power-scaling. Good to know. I gotta try a Dyne soon, I'm gassing bad!

One word of advice: Make sure you have $2,000 in your bank account before you go try a 'Dyne because you WILL drop the $$$s on it! Even the 1 x 12 combo is not a compromise. It sounds INCREDIBLE!

This amp has been a pain in the *** ever since I tried it. All I want to do is unload all my gear and get one but finances are tight because **school** and I couldn't make up the difference.

Primal,

Try to continue to have patience waiting for your custom order S4. I believe you will find it to be well worth the wait once you receive it!

:D That is the truth. I thought I was doing pretty well with my Express 5:25, until I was trying a new guitar and the shop plugged me into an ED. 5 minutes was all it took and I knew that the ED had all the sounds in my head. There was no way I was getting one at that time, but I did wish I had waited a little longer on the Express.

It ended up taking a year before I took home my ED 8)

Ya, It has been almost a year since I tried one and this is exactly the thing. It has all the sounds I have in my head and my current rig, while fantastic, is driving me crazy. I just want to unload all of it and get a Dyne. A 1 x 12 combo will do fine and I can't believe I'm saying this since I'm such a head and cab kind of guy!

I traded my Shiva for an ED 1x12 combo and never looked back, until I tried the Bogner Ecstasy but that's a different thread all together.

The Shiva was a great amp for Classic Rock but I'm not really a Classic Rock kind of guy so it always left me wanting more. I tried pedals in front of it, a few different Keeley TS9s, Boss DS1, T Rex Alberta, and it still lacked enough "balls". The clean channel was amazing, EL 34 w/ Reverb, and was probably one of the best I've ever played. Cool amp, just not the one for me.

The ED covers all of the territory the Shiva did with just the clean and Lo Channels and has the Mesa thump with the Red channel, just what the Shiva lacked. I enjoyed the hell out of my ED and I'd buy one again if I ever had the spare change required.

Primal,

Yeah, I do realize the Badger is a single channel amp.....and for that reason alone I would not buy it for my gigging needs. However, I am still anxiously awaiting to audition a Suhr Hedgehog (if it ever hits the streets) which has been in development for a very long time. On paper, it sounds like it would be a fantastic amp for my needs (if it ever comes to fruition)! ;-)

I would also love to "audition" the New 20th Anniversary Shiva.....as it seems Bogner has enhanced it substantially based on threads I have read in the Bogner Forum.

However, neither Bogner or Suhr amps are available for me to "audition" in my area which is disappointing, but at the same time.....probably a good thing!

Thanks for the feedback.

I take it you are using an ecstasy now?

Still rocking the Ecstasy and still loving it. I'd love to get another Shiva someday 'cuz the cleans were sooooo nice, but I've got a pretty good clean dialed in on my Ecstasy and I'm very content.
