Anyone know why Mesa discontinued the old Rect 4x12?

Are you sure that they have discontinued them? They are still mentioned in the catalog as being an option. Page 53 under the full stack picture it reads "Recto Standard
Straight comes with straight baffle. Also available with slant baffle." They just aren't listed on the website, on either the cab or discontinued pages. I had two of the straight front/angled baffle cabs. They were great and I loved the look of them. I just sold both of them last week to a couple of friends in other bands. I am getting true straight fronts now. I'll let you know how different they sound once they come in (being built, so it'll be at least a couple weeks), and they will be a little different sounding anyways because I am getting a different speaker combination than what are in both of cabs that I sold. I have heard that the true straight fronts have more bass response and a deeper tone and move a little more air. They also spread the sound straight outward, and are supposedly a little punchier than the angled cabs. Mark Tremonti swears by the straight fronts, and most of the bands that I have played with in the metal/hardcore scene use the true straights now. They sound great to me. The nice thing about the angled cabs was you could still stack them, and yet have the sound angled up towards your head.

I got 2 of them... they sound alot deeper and darker than the slanted 4x12. I love em and I was watching a Foo Fighters concert on Palladium... saw that these were all over the stage with 2x12 rect horizontal cabs on top. I got this same configuration with Black Shadows in the 2x12.

I can't wait to hear the tonal difference once I get my straight fronts. Thanks for that description. I saw that performance too...where they had Page and Jones come out for a Zeppelin song near the end....what an experience that would be!! And the Foo had some great tone on the stage as well.

That's my plan once I get the funding is to get 2x12's to go on my 2 4x12's. The "6x12" configuration is a great sound, and it is a little better IMO than a full stack because it doesn't hit you at head level quite as loud as a full 4x12, allowing you to still hear what's coming out the monitors (works especially well if you have 2 guitarists in the band).

That's the cab I went with and it sounds great, I ordered it like that so those speakers would be angled up plus I could put my Triaxis 8 space rack on top of it kinda like a head. Added some rubber feet to that smaller rack so it would sit leaving a few inches hanging off the back yet flush at the front. The 2:90 on the bottom to keep the center of gravity lower.
I had the Mesa 12 space shock mount rack box for shows for a while "The magic box" which was great for what it did but I would rather have my knobs and buttons more accessible.
If I were to use it for live shows now I would probably get a smaller rack again with just the 2:90/Triaxis/Gforce. That cab sounds great.
