I am having a tough time using Channel 2 on my Road King for anything other than an alternate clean channel, or an effects laden clean. I am looking for a dirty tone more similar to RAW in channel 2. Does anyone know a mod I can do to achieve this?

I know I can use an OD or distortion pedal but that's cheating in my book!!!

Thanks!

haha well if that kind of thing was common knowledge, then people like Monsta-Tone and Jerry at FJA Mods would be out of business!

Why don't you try channel 1 for more dirty and use channel 2 for clean? It seems like a lot of people are afraid to use channel 1 for anything but cleans and channel 2 for anything but brit for whatever reason.

If you push the gain up (maybe add more treble/mid if you need more gain) on clean/fat/tweed (your guitar and pickups will determine which mode works best) it sounds really nice.

I'll play around with channel 1's dirty sounds, but from my experience it is better at cleans than 2.

I have the treble and gain cranked on channel 2, and a PRS Custom with HFS in the bridge, which is a powerful hot pickup. It gives a pretty good tone but I am looking for something like a Raw mode in channel 2. Gosh!!

So these mod guys like monsta tone and FJA mods can do stuff like this?

I am pretty sure Andy does mods like that, but ya might want to ask him.

And I had my Recto modified by Jerry at FJA Mods. Shoot him an email and ask him about what you are thinkin. He is a nice guy.

RK 1. I found the channel 2 in brit mode with high treble, gain and mids kinda useable, but I really think it would be cool if I could somehow have it modded to "clone" channel 3 onto channel 2 with a push pull or something... It would be great to have 3 high gain channels to work with.

May sound silly, but went with my ears on this one. Dime the bass and put mids at around 2.30 (o'clock), zero the presence. (el34 + diode)

dime the gain and push up the treble to add extra gain too taste (just before ice pick highs)

get a nice classic rock tone, still not as heavy as I'd like it and a bit 'ice picky' but loud in a band situation sounds great, similar to my Marshall jvm crunch channel. Really cuts the mix

I figured you had a RK I. It's been a while since I've played the RK I and II side by side, but I remember the RK II "Brit" mode having a lot more gain on tap.

There is no such thing as cheating when it comes to guitar tone! Too many musicians let what other people say effect how they deal with guitar equipment.

Some great tones have been done with pedals, not so great tones have been done with pedals, but overall you look at most professional musicians board and YOu will see at least one or two different kind of OD or distortion pedals. In the end if you can get great tone out of a little OD box then what do you care? Guitar is not a club where you can only do things one way!

Musicians that I know of that use pedals

Almost anyone that plays a dual rec these days uses some OD to boost the preamp

On my RK1 I love to use teh brit mode, I max the treble, gain, leave bass and presense around 12 noon and slam the front end with a ibanez TS9 with the gain and drive maxed, you want to talk about a great vintage marshall vibe!

+1 to that. I just view the OD pedal as another tool to EQ your sound how you want it.

I mean it feels like cheating to me personally. I got this 4 channel amp with such nice high gain so that I didnt have to use pedals, which I personally dont like to use. Its also too many buttons to press if I had to switch to channel 2 then hit an overdrive pedal. I have been able to get some good dirty ballsy overdrive tones out of the channel 2, but it would be nice to have something a little more useable, similar to the rhythm 2 channel of a Mark IV. Its crunchy with less gain, but it can be dialed to a good high gain.

I tried fooling around on Ch.2 of my RKII... came up with this. It's not very gainy but I like it... is it similar to what you're going for or not quite?

EDIT: Here's the settings in o'clock

Loop off
Master 7:30
Presence 9:30
Bass 9
Mids 11
Treble 2
Gain 5:30
Fat mode, big-bottle EL34s, tube recto

Sounds cool man!! I am looking for more something like the Raw mode. gainy, crunchy, can be used for verses and stuff and still have a nice modern feel.
