The real question is what exactly are you wanting the OD to do for your tone? Answering that question with as much exactness of detail will determine what type of OD/boost/etc. you may want to look at. While using the 808 or its various clones as a starting point isn't a bad idea, you still shouldn't get one for the exclusive reason that that's what you've heard lots of other people have done. At least have an idea of why they chose that particular box.
The 808 and its myriad clones is a common OD choice for Recto users because it cuts out some of the flubby bass that Rectos are known for, resulting in what is commonly known as "tightening" the bass. It also adds in some upper mid frequencies and harmonic content, things the Rectos are also known for lacking. The other main reason people get the 808 is because it, or one of its clones, is the single most popular and available type of OD on the market. They can be fairly cheap and are very easy to find.
There are a great deal of other possibilities that exist beside the 808 platform, though. Again, it all really depends on what you want the box to do for your particular tone. The more precisely you can answer that question, the easier it will be to find an OD that exactly matches what you're wanting.
