Any words of wisdom on a Rect-O-Verb?

I've used the board for research mainly but I've been lurking for a while. I have a hard time getting a usable sound out of "modern" mode on the RoV. I have put EL-34s in the power section which may be part of the problem, however "vintage" sounds incredible.

Even with the treble and presence off the sound is harsh. The tone on my guitar knob muddies it up and does nothing for me (Les Paul Classic with Duncan Distortion, Ibanez RGT42 with Blackouts).

Any thoughts? I may go back to 6L6s to see if that helps, but other than that I'm lost.

My experience with Modern mode on any rectifier is that it is harsh by design. They boost the mids a lot.

I have EL34's and don't use Modern mode; sounds too harsh. Vintage and Raw for me. Doesn't help you, though...

Have you tried an EQ in the loop and/or out front? MXR 10 band is very good but if you're on a budget the Danelectro Fish n Chips is pretty good.
