I purchased a Rectoverb 1x12 combo that should be here in the next day or two. It's a series II and I will be playing a Custom 24 through it.

I'm used to bright, harsh V-30's, but heard the C90 was quite a bit darker. I'm pretty excited to listen to the difference.

So you any good tips as far as some modern/higher gain settings? I plan on doing tons of experiment with all of the parameters myself, but also wanted to stir up some gear chat 8)

I have some brand new JJ 6L6GC tubes I bought for a previous amp, so I will also throw those in and see how they sound. How do you guys/gals like the Rectoverb with EL-34's?

Thanks!

welcome to the club!!

if you want modern high gain i would say try an OD or Clean Boost infront of the amp. It adds a whole nother aspect to high gain. Other than that a lot of us like to use an eq in the loop to get things tight and bring out some mids to add some thump. But if you want some heaviness get an OD you will not be disappointed.

very good amp. an od in front of it and your in tone heaven.tighthen things up and adds a little bite

Good choice! My series 2 rectoverb has been my tone monster for 2 years now and I love it! I haven't tried an OD in front of the amp, but the tones I can get from it without any help are plenty sweet. There is a lot of gain available to you. A lot. Just be patient when you are working with the EQ. If you find the amp to dark for your liking, you can try EL 34's in the power section. They really brighten the amp up. If it's a smooth clean tone you want that is so buttery and wonderful (I love my amp), keep the 6L6's in there. Also, watch that output knob! If you are not careful, the amp will blow you through a wall.

As to using the high gain. In modern mode, I found that when I sweep it past 2:00, the gain nature of my distortion changes. It goes from chunky overdrive, straight into sonic hell (in a good way). So I typically set my gain around this point, but not too much past it, and don't overlook the vintage mode for high gain.

These are awesome amps! I recommend a Warehouse Guitar Speakers (WGS) Veteran 30 speaker (a V30 clone with a smoother upper mid). An RCA 12ax7 sounds great in V1. Set everything at noon and tweak from there (aside from channel master and output!). You'll love this amp for sure! An OD in front is certainly a good idea to tighten things up - just keep the amp's gain a little lower to keep it from getting too muddy. Good luck!

Thanks for the info everyone! Can't wait to experiment. Unfortunately, it won't be tonight. I just got home from class, and missed the FedEx guy by 30 minutes.

Sometimes waiting another day can seem like weeks!

As far as OD pedals, I just have a Digitech Bad Monkey right now. Try not to let the Digitech name fool ya, it's really a decent pedal, but more vintage oriented.

Any of you run a Fulltone OCD or Fat Boost in front of the high gain stuff?

I've heard good things about this pedal and most people love it as a boost.

It's a pretty mild boost that really doesn't effect your tone much at all. Not too over the top, but adds a nice bluesy crunch when running it through the clean channel. I'm not sure if it will be what I'm looking for if I want to strum a power chord and rip someone's throat out with it, though. It will stay in the line-up, but I will definitely be on the market for something that will make satan blush, and tell me to calm down if I will need something extra with this amp.
