i'm looking to learn electronics so that i can build my own amp. i'm doing this just for the sake of teaching my brain something new. are there any "must-have" books out there that i should know about? please understand that i'm not looking to get a PhD in electronics. i don't want to be an electrical engineer. i'm just looking to learn whatever i need to know to build an amp. hell, i can't even read a schematic at this point so i guess i've got a lot to learn. so if anyone knows of any good books and/or websites that will get me going on the "path" i would appreciate it. thanks!

Thinskin!

Inside Tube Amps by Dan Torres, exactly what you are looking for. Love that book! Easy to read, and wonderful info, also you can learn how to read a schematic there...I used info in that book to help me do up my first ever turret board for my infamous Frank-en-Champ!

I've read a lot of books on the subject and the one that pulled it together for me was The Guitar Amplifier Handbook by Dave Hunter.

He broke down each system in the amp, discussed a bunch of amps in detail, interviewed several well known builders and included an amp build project.

all the above and check out Kendricks - Gerald Weber's books and DVDs. They maybe expensive but they're quite valuable especially the DVDs where if you are a visible person these DVD shows you how to mods instead of reading about it.

http://www.diyguitarist.com/Misc/J_Darr.htm Try this link for Jack Darrs book.It is kind of old,but so is tube technology, lot of good basics.Geralds books are great, but it helps to have some basic knowledge to get everything out of them.

While this won't help you learn the tech aspect of building, it's a great site for theory http://www.freewebs.com/valvewizard/
Merlin also wrote a book that many people love.

AX84.com is a great community for amp builders.

Cheers,
Bane
