So, I've recently realized that my Dual Recti 3 ch. head and Marshall cab are wayyyy too much for my small apartment. And I miss reverb and such. I have the opportunity to trade my half stack for a Tremoverb combo amp and brand new Mesa 2x12 extension cab. That way I have the cab for gigs and the amp by itself wouldn't be too much at home. What do ya guys think? Is this a decent trade value wise? Will it still be able to get that great Dual Recti crunch tone?

yes the tremoverb is fantastic... if you don't need the 3rd channel go for it!!!

Thanks dude. I don't often use the third channel cuz I just can't get it to sound the way I want it to...any other opinions?

It really depends on which marshall cab you have i guess, seems like a fair trade considering price wise, you might be able to make a 100 to 150 more if you sold your set up, but is it worth the hassle.

But at the same time you are not really down grading, and trust me that tremoverb combo is one heavy beast. If you truly want to down grade look for a 50 watt head and a 2x12. But just so you know, both the tremoverb and the dual rectifier you can pull two tubes and run saftly in 50 watt mode as long as you match the ohms up, more on that if you are interested later. But honestly not realy a big difference between running a 100 watt head into a 2x12 compared to running 100 watt head into a 4x12 when it comes to volume level and apartment playing. However tone will change considering you are going from a 4x12 into a open back 2x12 most of the time and you might not like it.

Now to tone wise, if you never played a tremoverb just be prepared that it is more bright with more upper mids, different tone then what you might be use too, but you might just love it. ALso like i said above, going from a closed back 4x12 to a open back 2x12 is a huge difference and you may not like it.

This is a local deal, so I'd def. be trying it before I OK things...but thanks for the advice. I will certainly keep it in mind and be on the lookout. My "downgrade" comment was meant more space-wise than volume-wise. Plus I've heard that the TOV's clean channel is better, which is very important for me.

Well you will like the clean better, it is a better clean, plus an open back cab will make the cleaner better. However with the space, you are not really loosing much space with going with a combo and 2x12 cabinet, maybe 6 or 7 inches high will be the difference.

Well the space thing applies because I'd keep the cab somewhere else, as I wouldn't be using it in my apartment. My buddy came over the other day and he's AMAZING at tweaking amps...so I'm having second thoughts about giving up my Dual Recti. Updates to follow tomorrow :)

I have the same problem and here is what I did:

I bought 2 Y2J YellowJacket tube converters and plugged those into my amp with el-84s. To make this work, you have to select tube rectifier, pull out one tube rectifier (doesn't matter which) and only run two power tubes. This is the configuration: _ X X _ or X _ _ X where _ is the empty tube socket and X is the yellow jacket. You then have to rematch the ohmage from guitar to speaker because removing tubes changes how the load is 'interpreted' by the amp. The ohmage output on the head should now be half that of the cab so if you are running an 8 ohm cab, you now need to wire it up to the 4 ohm output. Just remember when you load in all your power tubes, you have to replace the rectifier tube and switch the speaker wiring.
For a 4 x 12, I suggest using a marshall 1960ax or alternatively, you could get a used 1 x 12 and toss a G12T - 75 or a G12m - 25 in there for low sensitivity goodness. Surprise, 15 - 20watt tube practice amp that can be converted back to a 100watt gigging beast in less than 30 seconds.

That sounds cool but I'm not one to tinker with amps (just buildin' custom guitars :) ). I'm mainly looking for advice as to whether or not this is a good trade. My main concern is not being able to get the same kinda crunch and chug out of the Tremoverb as I do from my Dual Recti 3-ch. head.

Well, I'd hardly consider pulling tubes 'tinkering'.

You'll just find that a combo sounds different than a halfstack. A halfstack has this wide, focused, and thumpy distortion tone that nothing but a 4 x 12 can really replicate. I've heard a tremoverb and it does have a huge gain tone, but it just won't be the same. Either you will like it or you won't. If not, I was providing a solution that would get the levels down for those apartment situations!
