I have nothing lined up and I don't think I'd actually go through with it but I was toying with the idea of trading my LS 10/50/100 for a 5:50 or similar Boogie.

Is that a really bad trade?

(Again it's only an idea. I love my LS)

I dunno, depends I guess. I'm heavily biased in favor of the LSC, so I think you're crazy for even entertaining the idea. This particular topic has come up more than once around here, but what the heck?

The Express has some good things going for it: it's a lot lighter; it has more "out of the box" tones ready at your fingertips; seems a little easier to get a heavier tone, depending on your definition of "heavy". If I needed a variety of distinct tones, like if I was in a really diverse cover band that ranged from 70s to 80s and beyond, I'd consider the Express because the voicings seem more distinct from one another. Bridges "vintage" and "modern" tones decently.

Downsides of the Express: mainly that it's a bit noisy. Also some folks complain that the OD doesn't get heavy enough for metal. And though I liked it enough when I tried it, it seemed to lack a certain finesse that I wanted.

I think the LSC is a spectacular amp, especially because of the abovementioned finesse. It's highly configurable and tweakable, rock-solid, responsive and expressive as all hell; where the Express gives you distinctly different voicings, the LSC gives you a platform to get the sounds you want simply by using your hands. It weighs a ton, so if I lived in NYC or something I'd probably forego it for something lighter... but I don't, so I'm happy as a clam with mine.

I know if someone just walked up and offered me an Express, I'd take it in a heartbeat. But I'd never trade my LSC for one -- and that's just me. :) Maybe some of the Express advocates will chime in.

So two things:

1) Is what I have called an LSC? (I thought, for some unknown reason, the LSC was the 50/100)

2) God it's so freaking heavy, and it has more glass in it than a meth lab. I live in the woods in "upstate" New York so mostly this doesn't come up :)

It is an amazing amp. It is also crushingly loud! Which I do like. I supect I don't need this sort of loud. I probably should have gotten the LSS but it had literally just come out when I got handed mine.

IMO The LSC is one of the best Boogies. I don't think the Express series is in the same league. All Boogies are loud. But most Boogies sound great at low volumes as well. I wouldn't even consider trading a LSC for an Express. I also don't think the LSS is any quieter than the LSC.

I don't know if there's an official designation of either model as "Classic" -- I've mostly heard it as a shorthand way of distinguishing it from the Special (as opposed to distinction by omission). I usually see yours come up as the "LSC 100/50/10" or something along those lines. Classic either way, I think. The pre-10 watt LSC has also been referred to here as the Blue Pig.

And yes, it's insanely loud... and srf399 is right, the LSS isn't much quieter. But you have the option of putting YellowJackets w/EL84s in your LSC, which will cut the output down by half or more; actually, the LSC has a lot of options that the LSS does not (Tweed power, bias selection, 6L6/EL34/6V6/EL84/etc). I put the LSS in the same category as the Express (or any other Boogie) as something I'd accept in a heartbeat, but wouldn't trade my Pig for.

I'd keep the LSC. In the future I think it will be the modern "Twin". It will allways be a workhorse. I'm sure the 5:50 is a good amp, I played a 5:25, and ended up w/a LSS. I wouldn't trade. If you don't owe $ on it, it's not eating anything..

My LSC is a 40/50/100...and I wouldn't part with it. Yes it's a heavy beast, espcially in the road case that it lives in. But with that weight comes serious tone. It's hands down the best amp I've ever owned and it's built to withstand the road. I'm about to add a matching extension cab to it for a short stack.

Keep the Lone Star and buy some pedals, That's what I do when I start gassing for a new amp. Although I am looking hard at a Diezel.
