Went to Dream Theater last night, great show they never disappoint anyway, but this was a outdoor venue so the sound is not bouncing off everything so it really sounded great (nice and clear)I was around row 19 center and what I could see John Petrucci ‘s rig he had two Mark IV’s and a Lone Star no sign of a Mark II C+ ( not saying it was not there just did not see one) both Mark’s where on R3 all night never changed the EQ’s were also on and effects loop come to think of it.
Also earlier during the day they had a signing right by my place not my thing but figured what the heck. Wanted them to sign something a little different so I had them sign the back of my Mark IV face plate. The band seemed to get a kick out of what I chose (and that’s what I wanted just give them a laugh)John and Jordon in particular.

hate me for saying this but oh well.

i stopped liking dream theater thoroughly (but I still respect them a lot) after I saw them live in Irvine a couple years ago for Gigantour. RK/lonestar rig back then (very BOOMY). great show but the super-complicated and long arrangements, goofy 360 degree keyboard twirling and the singer killed it for me. Not to mention the bassist playing lead passages throughout the set (watch them fingers pumping! ****) I honestly had a headache during their set until it went away when Megadeth came out and disassembled completely...

but that guy is a great guitarist, no question.

i was there at the gigantour show as well and i thought their sound sucked their in Irvine, as did everyone's except for Megadeth's.

I haven't been back to Irvine to see anyone since.

but give them another chance at another venue. I am originally from NY and have seen DT many many times over the years, (their NY shows usually are the best ones, and i have been to some which they were recording for DVD), and it really depends on venue...they sound amazing in one place, and in others the mix is strange.

try em again!

yah, I've watched videos where all you can hear is the keyboard, and videos where everything is really muddy. Then, you always have great videos where everything sounds crisp, clear, and awesome.

It took so long for me to get use to his voice and it's grown on me. I'd agree though, in order to grow and go further they need a different singer, he's done all he can.

They still grow and go further by every album. It's not like he's in the way for them to evolve. They're all very happy with James, and he's very happy with them. You should be happy they didn't stick with Charlie Dominici! :D There's a reason LaBrie's been in the band for so many years; They're simply happy with him as the singer. And that's all there is to it.

There are times I have found James voice fatiguing, however always nailed his lines and did not sound like he was reaching for notes. But something would get to me. Lately though I don’t get that same feeling could be a few things. Maybe his voice has changed a bit through the years and I just like it more. Maybe like ToneAddictJon I’m having just grown into it. Or maybe it’s just the way his voice is being processed. Ironically I have gravitated more to James since the introduction of Jordon into the band, can’t give you a precise reason why, just do
Any way you slice it IMHO James sounded amazing the other night I had seen them.
One of the side projects James did a couple of years age was, Ayreon (the Human Equation)and he sounded real good on this project but was not doing as much operatic stuff as with DT.
