hello! i've been wondering what the 6L6 bias swith does, i have a dual recto roadster 2x12 and i've been wondering what does it take for that light to go on. i've tried turning the switch and just makes it louder (posible using different tubes?). according to the mesa website its a bias select switch between the 6L6 and the EL34. please help!

The bias should be used if you would swap the 6L6s for EL34s... the light will then be red. I wouldn't switch the bias unless you are running the EL34 tubes though.

aaah i see. so, what would be the difference between the 6L6s and the EL34s ?? is it mainly sound or power?

Both I believe but I will let others chime in...
EL34s seem to run hotter than the 6L6s in mine and they sound much different. I wasn't sure if I'd like them or not; i got them because my band is hitting the studio and I wanted a different sound option. I really prefer them over the 6L6s now. I haven't even put the 6L6s back in since I got the EL34s.

You should ALWAYS keep the bias switch set to match the type of tubes you are using. Don't change it unless you change to the other type of tubes. Failure to do so could possibly damage the amp.

EL34's have a bit more upper midrange character to them and a higher and tighter bass. EL34's also start to breakup sooner (i.e. less headroom) and do so more gradually. 6L6's have a bigger deeper sounding bass and a crisp sparkling high end. They tend to breakup later (i.e. more headroom) and a bit less gracefully. Some people say that EL34's sound more Marshall like while 6L6's sound more Fender and Boogie like. For many, EL34's are favored when more breakup or power tube distortion is desired, while 6L6's are favored when clarity and headroom are desired. Depeding on the amp and speakers, the difference can be subtle, so there really are no rules. The great thing about Boogies is you can try them both and use the one you like. As for output power, EL34's and 6L6's are pretty similar in that regard.

nice! thanks for the info. i've the manual before, i just wanted to get an experience opinion from experienced mesa owner since i just got mine this summer. thanks still. :p

EL34's in a Recto run a little hotter and have a little more pronounced mid-range.
If you flip the switch to the 34 setting with 6L6, you can fry a grid resistor.
Pick up a set and check them out.
