I've been able to cop a really good high gain chunk out of my Studio Preamp/Mesa 50/50 rig. I'm running into two closed-back Earcandy 1x12's. When I turn one side of the power amp all the way down so that only one cabinet is in use, the low end is just massive. Shakes the room. But once I turn them both up to equal volume for stereo operation, most of the low end seems to disappear. Is this normal?

No, it's not normal. Sounds like one of your speakers is out of phase so the cabinets are cancelling each others bass response. Check that first.. Could also be a speaker cable that is wired in reverse on one end, but chances of that are rare.

I agree, sounds like it could be a phasing issue. If you are running your rig in stereo, try eq'ing each channel differently, in other words, use 1 cab for lows and low mids, and anther for mid hi's and hi end. It doesn't have to be extreme, but a little could help alot.

check the wiring of your cabs!
this is the classic out of phase effect while using more cab.

open both cabs, take a 9V battery and hold it onto the speaker cables.
do this on both cabs, and take a close look at the direction the speaker moves by contacting the battery.
if one moves forward and one backwards, you got an out off phase. in this case turn the wires of one cab at the inputjack.
