As is my understanding, the 2:50 is very close internally to the old 50/50, the primary difference being a facelift, bias switch and a few spec changes (loss of the low power mode).

Would that be correct? How similar do they sound? Is the old 50/50 a simple, reliable power amp (ie are they still running strongly, is there much that can go wrong?)

The 2:50 doesnt have the 'low-power' mode of the old 50/50, how effective was this mode, and how exactly did it work?

If anyone has any other opinions or thoughts on the differences between the two i'd be interested to hear them.

Regards

I can't comment too much of the differences in features from the 50/50 to the 2:50 but I have played through both often enough. The 50/50 wasn't mine so I didn't check it out in that fashion. Just put some different pedals, modelers, preamps, etc., in front of it and ran it through the paces.

It was the 50/50 that brought me to eventually buying a 2:50. I didn't expect the 2:50 to sound more or less better. I just wanted a brand new one-Which meant a 2:50. Also, after pulling and re-racking that 50/50 a few times, it further pushed me towards the 2:50 over the 2:90 that I was so seriously considering. Don't get me wrong. The 2:90 is awesome, has quite a few more features, and possibly more headroom (though I've been told the contrary by some). But the weight difference sealed it for me. Plus 50 watts a side is PLENTY loud enough for damn near anything.

I don't see how you can go wrong with either the 50/50 or the 2:50. I loved the 50/50 for as much as I used it. I also love my 2:50. As far as reliability, it's a MESA! Aside from total abuse or an odd bad egg, maybe a scratchy pot or something is about as bad as it gets, in general.
