What has your experience been with 2x12 and 4x12 cabs? Specifically dealing with sound, and not money or convenience, what have you found to be the pros and cons of each?

Thanks!

I find 4x12s have more power, more low end and are better for higher volume playing. I find 2x12s slightly tighter, lack a bit of low end and are better for lower volume playing. Now this is assuming your talking both being a closed back cab. There are many different designs that can change the generalization I made such as ported, vented and open back cabs.

If your looking for a great cab right now I'd look at Mills Acoustics. I just got a 4x12 yesterday and I say without any doubt in my mind they are the best cabs on the face of this earth (to me at least). I've played them all (Mesa, VHT, Bogner, Diezel, etc.) and none of them hold a flame to the Mills in terms of how much low end handle and how much power it can dish out. If your not concerned with money i think they're the best value out there as they're priced basically right along side Mesa and VHT, and a few hundred below yours Diezels and Bogners.

you might want to check out Port City 2x12 OS Waves cabs. (http://portcityamps.com/) I opted for one over the Mills, and I'm very satisfied, but you couldn't go wrong with either both Daniel and Dave Mills, are great guys that stand behind there products. They are both miles ahead of anything found in a super music retail store.

Well right now I've got an Avatar 2x12, which I'm pretty happy with. Only thing is that it sounds better in the room than on a recording, but that's just a matter of engineering it the right way.

Mainly I just want to get a scope on the 2 types of cabs in general. I've got a Recto 4x12 but not where I'm currently living, so I really can't compare.

i have a recto 2x12 and it sounds alot nicer being in the room with it than recording it. weird

i also had a cheaper marshall 4x12 and it has more power for loud playing but its just such a pain to carry around. the mesa 2x12 is working out fantastic and it suits my nomad great. i havent been able to crank it though yet :(

I've actually got the same issue. I'm going to record in a little bit to see what I can come up with, but it's interesting you should mention that. If you've got any tips or tricks, let me know!

yeah i heard it might just be the speakers but it sounds completely different recorded and in person. i tried the direct out briefly and it sounded ok but there was alot of clipping and rather than retweak every thing on my amp i figured to just deal with the weird 2x12 sound.

if you have any other questions on recording only theres a section for that on here.
