Hi guys,
Did some experimenting on Friday with my 20/20 and cabs. I tried plugging my 8-ohm cabs into th 4-ohm outs (normally I just match 'em.)
Pretty significant tonal/volume difference. The safe mismatch produced a much darker and more compressed tone, especially notable with a fair bit of overdrive happening. It also seemed like the volume knobs on the 2/20 became Fender pots... there about the same difference between 9'oclock and 1'oclock than between 8:00 and 9:00.
However, it didn't eat enough volume to make the rig playable at apartment/baby levels, if that's what you're looking for-- the volume was the same between the matched and mismatched setups until about 9'o'clock on the 20/20, which is good and loud.
It seemed to me like I might be able to get a thicker, smoother lead tone this way, at the cost of some dynamics, but I actually don't need one so I didn't experiment too much.
