I recently acquired a 1995 2 ch. Dual rectifier. Two questions. Why is there a silver cover over the V1 preamp tube?

Secondly, is there a particular type of preamp tube that goes in the V1 section? Or is all based on preference and what type of sound you are looking for? I only ask b/c someone suggested I keep a lower power preamp tube here to prevent noise? Again, not sure that's why I'm here :)

Thanks!

The shield is there to help prevent noise interference from outside sources (cell phones, radios, etc.) as V1 is the most sensitive.

While the 90's Rectos originally came with an SPAX7 in V1 (low noise and microphonics), you can put whatever you like in that slot. I have a regular (i.e. not low noise rated) EH Gold Pin and the rest Chinese in my 95 Recto. Sounds insane.

Check my sig for a sound clip.

Hope that helps.

Ok, that makes sense why the shield is there. Thanks for explaining! I currently have a Phillips UOS Ecc83 there and like it. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong. I did check the clip you have and that Recto sounds mad!!!!!! Nicely done. Thanks again!

Some people like putting a lower gain tube in the V1 because it lowers the overall gain of the amp, and that's the sound they're looking for.

Most people use a regular 12AX7/ECC83. Feel free to experiment until you find one you like the sound of.
