i heard the 1x12 thieles get 'lost in the mix in a live situation'...is that if you're at an unmic'd gig vs a 4x12? I was thinking of running two 1x12 thieles but ive been hearing good things about mixing a 2x12recto and 1x12 thiele, or 1x12 open back and 1x12 thiele...i want a balanced sound, no harsh highs or gross honky mids. smooth, and audible in a live situation..i currently run a recto 2x12

I really can't see a pair of EV loaded thiele cabs getting lost in the mix against a Celestion loaded 4x12. One thiele does sound small and directional, but a pair of them, vertical or horizontal sounds HUGE. The key is to slightly alter the projection angle of the vertical stack or horizontal cabs for maximum dispersion. This is the foundation of the Genz-Benz G-Force 2x12 with the angled speaker baffle board. 8)

My theile (C90 loaded) is scooped compared to my Recto 2x12, and my Recto 2x12 is scooped sounding compared to my Recto 4x12.

The 1x12 open back on the other hand is pretty mid heavy. It combines well with the theile.

Given the choice of theile vs 2x12 I take the 2x12. It's a lot cleaner/clearer sounding and the response is tighter than the theile or theile + open back.

"Lost in the mix" may refer to the nature of a closed cab versus an open back. The Thiele is focused and punchier, but if you are standing too close, it will blow past you.
The open back cab's rear sound projection reflects off the surfaces behind it, thus tending to fill up a stage.
Raising the Thiele helps if that''s your only cab. The 1 x 12 open-back combo on top of a Thiele gives you the best of both worlds.
Most of what you hear out of the 4 x 12 is the top two speakers anyway, because they're angled and closer to your ears. :D

I did a gig last month with a thiele EVM loaded 1x12. I was really worried about it, but it was perfect. Sounded absolutely great from clean to dirty. Cut very nice and just made you want to keep turning it up. Highly reco'd. Right now I have (on order) a new widebody "Thiele" cab at Mesa with an original Mesa branded EVM-12L to sit under my Mark V. I won't use anything else again.
