This is great way to record. I have a lot of experience recording and if you're after the tone that your amp provides in the room, your best option will be to mic it. But having the DI as a simultaneous 2nd track gives you all kinds of options and neat possible tricks.

First off.... NEVER NEVER plug your speaker output into the input of a device like the AudioBox. I'm surprised you didn't completely destroy the AudioBox when you did that. The Express series does not have a dedicated line out for recording and the Preamp send is not designed for it either...

Use one of the 4ohm outputs on your amp, to the "Left" 4ohm Mono input on the cab. That's a correct match.

Keep in mind my pickups are very hot, so that helps. But my Burn settings are approximately : Gain - 3:00, Treble - 12:30 or 1:00, Mids - 10:00, Bass - 9:00, Contour - 3:00

Where are you running the Contour control on the clean channel? That could be making a difference too. I added a closed back Mesa widebody 1x12 with a C90 to my 5:50 1x12 at a buddy's house last weekend and that made a HUGE difference in the sound of the amp. I may run my amp a bit different...

Another +1 I was jamming at my buddy's house this weekend with my 5:50 1x12 and he was playing his new Mark V. I had enough gain to keep up with him. When the Express is dialed in right, its got plenty of Metallica tones.

Your reverb is definitely screwed up. Probably just the V5 tube needs a replacement. You can try one of your other pre-amp tubes, that wouldn't be a problem.
