Swapping them would probably help. It certainly wouldn't do any harm.

I'm not an amp genius by any means, but it is interesting how little some guitar players know about their gear. I see a lot of people calling all 2-channels "pre-500" and of course everyone has a "very rare" or "hard to find" piece of gear.

Have you checked the wires going into the reverb pan? Maybe on of them came out/loose during shipping and is not all the way connected?

Your amp is probably close to 20 years old at this point. That seems to be about the time they need a little TLC, new caps and such. That may explain some of the muddiness.

Removing the reverb tank should be fine. It wouldn't matter where the knobs are set. It does matter what way the wires are connected. From my experience if you have them on backwards you get no reverb, or just static as you turn up the knob. Shouldn't cause any damage though.

You might want to see if he has a few of something already that he likes. Sometime those tone junkies can be particular :). Wouldn't want to drop $50 on something only to find out he has that and doesn't like them, or something like that.

I also have a tremoverb (head) that was running mesa 430s. I put a set of SED 6L6s in and felt like it was an improvement. To me they sounded clearer overall and added definition. In comparing these two sets I would say the SEDs are closer to your description than the 430s were. I don't have...
