    Mark V or VII

One would expect a $3,800 amp to have no cons. The Mark VII would have been perfect if they gave it a master volume and resonance control. No resonance is the one surprising flaw of the Mark V. Many much cheaper and smaller amps have a resonance control, and most amps with a presence control...

    6L6GC STR-448, 445, 443, and 441...

I ended up getting a pair of STR-441 and a pair of STR-445. Here's a comparison I did: Mesa/Boogie 6L6GC power tube comparison. Mark V on 90W, ch 3 Mk IV mode. EMG 81X, drop-C. EQ in the loop. Recorded direct from the slave out into a mix of 5 IRs (per channel, double-tracked stereo) I made of...

Do Tubes Make that much of a Difference

I said I would post a comparison I did, so here it is: Mesa/Boogie 6L6GC power tube comparison. Mark V on 90W, ch 3 Mk IV mode. EMG 81X, drop-C. EQ in the loop. Recorded direct from the slave out into a mix of 5 IRs (per channel, double-tracked stereo) I made of my speakers (MC-90 + V30 left...

    Mark V or VII

Playing a VII at a store is what made me want one, but finances led me to get a used V for half as much. I do wish I had the new Mk VII mode instead of the Mark I mode (which is essentially useless because it's so dark and bass-heavy). But the more I find out about the VII, the more I'm glad I...

LSS and pedals ( OD ) = hollow sound

"Hollow tone with a drop in volume" sounds like phase cancelation, but that can only happen in parallel or stereo signals... What is the signal chain?

    Effects loop volume

I'm in an apartment, too. I've never been able to experience my amps at their full potential. I made IRs of my speakers and run the slave out into the IR plugin with a reactive load on the amp.

    Effects loop volume

Yep, same in mine. Silver paint pen, 1-31-12.

    Effects loop volume

Mine has a date handwritten in silver paint pen by the power tubes. I'm assuming it's the date of manufacture, but maybe it's denoting a service or tube replacement...

    Effects loop volume

Mine is 2012. They did make some kind of change to ch3 ~2010 or so, but I don't know if it involved the FX loop. Email Mesa support, they replied to my recent question the next day.

    Effects loop volume

Yeah, that's making me think it's impedance related. Just yesterday I was dealing with a compressor pedal in front of the amp dropping volume when engaged, but engaging an overdrive after it brought the level back up to normal. I don't really remember, but I think what solved it was putting the...

    Effects loop volume

I would still try a different tube in the FX return stage V6. It could also have something to do with buffers/impedance mismatches. The FX send level knob is at noon? When I got my Mk V, it had a big volume drop when FX loop engaged, and some other noise & signal loss issues. I replaced all...

    Question about impedance matching

That's no good... All of the "safe mismatches" listed in the Mark V manual are for cab impedance being higher than the amp output impedance, i.e. 4 ohm tap -> 8 ohm cab or 8 ohm tap -> 16 ohm cab or both at the same time, but it never says it's safe to put a cab(s) with lower impedance than...

Do Tubes Make that much of a Difference

I play a lot of heavy, chuggy high gain stuff with a Mark V 90W, and I find my cab to sound too boxy with the back closed, with V30's or MC-90's, so I keep the back off.

Good pedal to put in front of a Mesa to overdrive it?

I use a Tube Screamer, Horizon Devices Precision Drive, Wampler Belle, and Friedman Buxom Boost in front of a Mark V. They all work well in front of channels 2 & 3, each giving a different flavor. All but the TS work with the clean channel. TS just doesn't sound good on its own to me. Buxton...

Do Tubes Make that much of a Difference

I'm running active EMGs with an overdrive in front of ch3 for high gain (chuggy rhythm) into a reactive load and slave out into the interface with the TwoNotes WoS plugin running IRs I made of my speakers. I just got matched pairs of 6L6GC STR-441 and 445, and have the old quad of 440's and a...

Do Tubes Make that much of a Difference

Exact opposite experience here... I've had 6 tube amps from 5 manufacturers, and currently have a Boogie Mark V and Carvin V3. I've rolled a whole bunch of different preamp tubes thru all of them and have recently been trying several different power tube configs in the Mark V. The only...

    6L6GC STR-448, 445, 443, and 441...

I had the idea to just tear the cone out of an old V30, which costs much less than a load box, but asking around, people seem to think that it won't work that way, or at least won't give the same response... Weber has that WeberMass thing, it's a load made of a speaker motor. But it's only...

    6L6GC STR-448, 445, 443, and 441...

I run IRs I made of my speakers in the WoS plugin. No power amp sim, EQ and Exciter off, just a flat IR loader. I recorded the IRs thru the Mk V return with presence at 0, on ch3 pentode. I actually did a bunch of IRs on different channels with pentode/triode and tube/diode. I did some with the...

    6L6GC STR-448, 445, 443, and 441...

I like my mic'd speaker sound, but I'm in an apartment and do my best work after midnight. So I captured IRs of my speakers with the mics I record them with. 4 speakers in a stereo wet/dry/wet config, a 2x12 on the Mk V for dry (after FX loop EQ) and a stereo solid-state 2x12 for stereo wet FX...

    6L6GC STR-448, 445, 443, and 441...

Yeah, I'll probably get a pair of 445 and 441. Since I use it mostly on 45W, I can do comparison recordings of each pair in the inner sockets, and see what mixing them all in 90W does. The 441: "provide the Treble and Presence Controls with an extended usable range without adding unwanted...
