    Mark V Terrible ground sound

To me, it sounds like it may simply be a power tube red-plating. When that happens it will result in a loud hum. I suggest trying swapping in new power tubes - if the old tubes were red-plating and you left the amp on it may have taken out a resistor. Good luck.

Boss MS-3 - anyone use it with Mark V?

I actually purchased an MS-3 a few weeks ago. The effects are perfect for my needs, and I am not using any of the loops. I wanted a pedal based multi-effects unit for a few simple effects and didn't want to drag a rack to gigs like I had in the past. I primarily use the delays, phaser, wah, and...

Mark IV Tube Task Chart, Description of tube functions

I noticed you misinterpreted Chris' post. He stated that Tweed must be used with 6V6 tubes not 6L6. You can use all modes/settings with 6L6 tubes.

    Thinking about trading my V

Suggestion: Before getting rid of your V, try some preamp tube rolling first. Swapping the stock preamp tubes made a big difference with my V combo.

Boss MS-3 - anyone use it with Mark V?

Thanks for the reply. The Boss ES-5 + ES-8 are switchers. Both ES & MS pedals look similar in design, but are actually a different. The MS-3 has some limited switching capabilities and loops like the ES, but it also has multiple effects built-in.

Boss MS-3 - anyone use it with Mark V?

I've been playing without effects the last few years, but have been thinking about adding some basic effects for a few songs. But I don't want to lug my G-Major/GCX Switcher/midi pedal rack to gigs, so am thinking about a basic, but good quality multi-effects pedal. The Boss MS-3 caught my eye...

    Mark IV Recommendations

I run my Mark IVA combo with 6L6's. I tried an EL34 mix a few years ago, but preferred the sound of all 6L6's. The only Mark that I like to run with a 6L6/EL34 mix is my MarkIIIblue. Here are the premp tubes use: V1 - 12AX7 - Sylvania JAN12ax7WN(?) (black plate) V2 - Tungsram 12AX7 (NOS) V3 -...

    Mark III amp cover

Yup,. In fact, I think all Mark's originally came with covers. At least I have covers for the Mark IIC, III, IVA, and V's that I purchased used.

Brad Gillis Night Ranger Tone Question

I've always heard that he played a IIC (not C+). Not sure if it is true or not, but his tone does sound similar to my C, which, in my opinion has awesome lead tone (great sustain on the edge of feedback and always cuts though the mix).

Mark Series GEQ? Where in the amp is it placed?

I can vouch for where the EQ is in the amps I have: In the Mark IIC, Mark III blue, and Mark IVA, the EQ is after the effects loop. In other words you can plug a different preamp output into the effects return, and still be able to use the EQ. I hope this info helps. As I recall, for the Mark...

    Troubleshooting my Mark III

It could be just a dirty pot. Did the pot produce "scratchy" tone when you turned it back and forth? If so, you could try spraying it with tuner cleaner/lube. It could also possibly be a cold/broken/intermittent solder joint. Mesa pots are very good quality and I've never had an issue with one...

    Preamp tubes question

I'm not a fan of SPAX's tonewise. For some reason, they do seem less musical than regular 12ax7's - I've found this to be true with the 1/2 dozen or so that I've had. I'm not a huge fan of JJ's either, but have also found that they can sound good in some amps. When I swapped-out most of the...

Speaker sounds blown but looks fine.. Ideas?

I'd first check for mechanical vibration on the cabinet (loose screw, hardware/corner bracket, lose board in cab (i.e. needs regluing). If that is fine, then the problem could be caused by a voice coil rub. As a result of gravity, speaker cones may sag over time which causes them to go out of...

    Best cab for mkiii

Carvin actually makes nice cabs. I think they are built and sound as good or better than Marshall, and can be had for a bargain price on the used market. Not a fan of the "fur" tolex they used on some of their cabs in the past though.

Mesa Mark IIC Combo, loaded, Simul-Class, EQ (Boston Area)

I played the amp over the weekend. I had forgotten how good it sounds. It's no longer for sale, as I'm going to hold on to it. I've had it for almost 30 years, and looks like it's going to be with me a while longer.

    NAD Mark IIb

I think the Eurotube site in incorrect regarding the EL-34 tube placement. I'm pretty sure that the EL34's can only be used on the outside pairs in a Simul-class amp. That is, unless the IIB amps were different than the other Marks.

    Halfback 4x12 Speaker Preference

Yup. At least that would be my choice - EV's on bottom with C90 's on top. Killer cabs, but weigh a ton.
